Pool constantly flipping to green within 2-3 days. I’m at a loss.

Pool is clearing. I’ll get it to crystal clear and take all measurements and report back.
Thing is, I have been here before. Last time, pool was crystal clear, we went for a long weekend for 4 days and came back and pool was green again.
Thanks for everyones help here.

Keep going! Follow ALL the steps! A pool should not turn green in only 4 days, so in the past when it has, that means you thought you had it cleared up because it looked good, but areas were missed such as what's mentioned in the comment above me.

Brush the heck out of it - I see the streaks where either a brush or robot went through the algae on pool surface. You have to break that up to allow SLAM to work. Bacteria have a nasty ability to build something called bio-film which can actually protect it from the chlorine.

So if you left with the FC in range, that's a 1 day buffer and you had little FC, if any, on day two and none a day or two before you got home. The sun will burn up to 4 FC per day in the peak season, and may still be consuming 2 or 3 per day by you in sunny CA.

I think I learned this recently about desert-like climates and how liquid chlorine doesn't work well out there. Great reminder! Perhaps OP should convert to a salt water generator (SWG)? Otherwise, 4 days going green seems crazy to me. My pool hasn't turned green after being late adding chlorine, and definitely could last more than 4 days without turning green. My pool is currently liquid chlorine.

Chlorine is chlorine. Liquid is as effective as any other source. Doesn't matter the sources...liquid, SWG, granular, pucks. In addition to chlorine, pucks will add CYA, cal-hypo will add CH. Doesn't matter the source of chlorine, if you maintain your FC for your CYA level, you will avoid algae. Link-->FC/CYA Levels

I understand chlorine is chlorine. So, I'll clarify the nuance for OP -- a SWG would be constantly feeding the pool with (generating) chlorine while liquid chlorine is obviously only added manually (unless of course you have some sort of feeder).

The point is liquid chlorine doesn't do well in desert climates. I mean, we had an entire discussion about this in another thread.

Other than OP not truly clearing all the algae, the only other reason he can't keep a pool from turning green after a measly 4 days is because he's in a desert climate that *liquid* chlorine can't handle.

I'm picking up what you're putting down. :)

Chlorine does the same in any environment. But in a harsh UV climate, folks will burn through it something fierce.

I also agree a swg would be the best play specifically to relieve the need for daily manual adds when away, but also to relieve them when home.

SWGs are the bees knees. I had my second one on-site before inking the build contract after moving. It was that high on the priority list.

@Busch09 You are supposed to run your pump 24/7 during the SLAM process.

Perform the SLAM process:​

  • Test the FC level and add enough chlorine to bring FC up to SLAM level 3-4 times per day.
    • The more often you can test and add FC, the faster your SLAM will proceed. However, you should not test and add more often than every two hours.
    • At the beginning of your SLAM, the chlorine is used quickly to kill algae. As the algae is killed off, you can reduce your testing and chlorine additions to 2-3 times per day.
    • We recommend testing after sunset and at sunrise to check if algae is consuming chlorine in the absence of sunlight (see OCLT).
  • Brush and vacuum the entire pool once a day if you can. Brush inside skimmers, under main drain covers, on weir doors, inside ladders, and behind removable lights if applicable.
  • Backwash or clean the filter when filter PSI increases by 25% over baseline.
  • Vacuum up debris as needed.
  • Run the pump 24/7 until you are done SLAMing.



Have you read the Pool School section? Are you following instructions to a T?

I know tone can be misunderstood via text, so please understand I don't say this with attitude:
I don't think you have been following the instructions or read the info available on this site. Otherwise, for example, you would have known to run your pump 24/7 during this time.

You also only post every few days or so instead of giving us the daily progress photos like requested. We really are trying to help. Pool care is not hard but you do have to follow instructions precisely.

Please, truly read this. Every word.

Make sure you are using 10ml water sample for the FC test and not the 25ml.
