Pool Build -- Annapolis, MD

Thanks, I have to repeatedly remind myself that we're after an organic, soothing look, with the pool integrating into the landscaping. Its hard to stay disciplined with so many amazing, sparkly, glossy options to chose from!

My husband is meeting with concrete contractor right now for the backfill and patios. We spec'd this outside of the PB contract at his suggestion.

On another topic, groomer turned my labradoodle into a poodle -- I guess this is the coat he'll wear during pool season, poor baby!!

Wrinkle: With October approaching, PB broached the idea of waiting until April 1 to plaster, which makes a lot of sense to me on a number of fronts: saves ~$1000 for PB's closing/opening package; no worries about pool chemistry during the first few months with new plaster and a closed pool; and, most importantly, now I can order a few lightstream mosaic dragonfly accents to scatter around -- or maybe turtles being as we are Terp alums!

Sounds like a good plan :). I'm not sure what kind of accents you're looking for, but have you considered buying the molds and pouring and painting your own little pretties to sit around?

I have several stepping stones I made that way, and I was just looking on Ebay, (I'm a frog collector myself), but they have this cool dude turtle mold with sunglasses on there that is up for auction right now that I think is adorable. Here's the link if you want to check him out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fun-new-pla...arden-mould-/311452523150?hash=item4884045a8e

Helen will they work on the deck at least?

I DO understand and support the wait for the plaster. I am not sure I could live with the mud and mess around the shell.

The brushing of new plaster in the cold----------NO thanks! BUrrrrrrrrrrr and much funnier to do while IN the pool.

Now you know you need to show us the pretties you are thinking of LOL.

That mold CJ post above is SO cute!

I thought it was cute too Kim. Helen there are tons of different stepping stones or statue molds on Ebay. I've found a couple I think I'm going to get to mess with through the Winter. My hands are getting so bad because of my severe carpal tunnel in them both that I'm afraid if I don't continue to force myself to use them through the pain for typing, painting, etc. that I'm going to soon lose a lot of the use of them. So painting on a couple pretty little stepping stones will actually be serving 2 purposes this Winter. :)
Here is a couple cute stepping stone molds with a dragon fly on it that you might also like?

Search for bobinbaltimore for a good MD winter build thread. Plaster won't get any better over the winter. The delayed mess (as mentioned above) is the only downside I see. It also leaves some additional excitement for the spring.

Just an FYI ...If you are installing the safety cover you would need to fill the pool up to normal winter levels too support the snow load. Diverting a downspout or two can work well to assist filling during the fall since the water doesn't need to be clean.

Allow me a brief vent...

Its day 21. Our plumbing trenches and pool are full of water -- wall-to-wall in the case of the pool, 1.5' feet in the center -- from the rain deluge that hit the east coast last week. The electrician scheduled to come out tomorrow now says next week (the rain set him back), which is unfortunate. What's more important is that he is a jerk! He came out to assess our site on Friday and he was planning some lame shortcuts and substandard approaches to mounting the panels and running the lines. Wouldn't pass inspection. And then he got mad at us for pointing that out. Then he proceeded to complain about how much he hates working with engineers. Gah. Jerk. We had an awesome electrician out last week and we could have easily had the pool work added to the panel work, but we didn't want to mess with the PB's subcontractor arrangements. Could've, should've, would've...

On a brighter note, it was interesting to watch the pool fill with water and to see how well the other crews did at achieving even depths from side to side of our spool. And the trenches are drying out already. Where's a zen smiley when I need him?? :)

Helen! You still can! You do NOT have to let the jerk do the work. In fact I would tell your PB how he treated you AND the shortcuts and such he wanted to take.

It is YOUR property and YOUR money. YOU should be treated with kindness and the work done RIGHT and to CODE!

Push back and get who/what you want!

+1 ^^^^^^^^^^

Kim is right! Don't take that garbage. YOU are the one spending HUGE amounts of $$$ on this pool and you DESERVE to have it done to your wishes. Tell your PB you refuse to have that electrician on YOUR work site. Your PB can find someone else.

If that jerk doesn't like working with engineers, well, guess what? He won't be getting the job now!

Good luck.

Hi Helen! Oh my word!!! I LOVE your step design! Between you and Suz, I have hope for great low rise steps in my pool! Thanks for sharing your build!
Doing a happy dance over here in OK:party::whoot:

+1 on what Kim said

OK, update time. Electrician left Friday afternoon saying that the previously scheduled work on Tuesday (tomorrow) would be delayed at least a week because of rain delays. But we JUST got a call that the electrical team would be coming today, and we're both at work. Fortunately, husband called PB earlier this morning to explain the situation and our concerns. The PB is handling it at this point. PB doesn't know the ins and outs of the electrical codes, but I am pretty sure he trusts that we do and that we will, in fact, hold him to those standards.

Takes some balls for the electrician to ignore an owner and then accelerate the schedule, don't you think?

ETA: Our coping and tile is getting dropped off today -- yeah! And thanks, nursenini -- see what you have to look forward to during the build?? LOL, its quite stressful!!!
