Persistent Algae Spots

Two thoughts for you.

One. Do you have a ladder and/or main drain? Algae can hide in ladder tubes and under main drain cover.

Two. If you can check and replace FC more often (every 1-2 hours), will go faster.

Sadly I’ll have to end this tomorrow due to going back to work and will not be able to tend to the pool slam. So have one day left and one more shot at getting it tomorrow morning.
Does this imply you are leaving town? If not, if you are able to just test in morning and evening that will still help continue the SLAM. You have done well to keep at it for a week so do not want to lose what you have gained. Have you checked your skimmer weir door or light niches that could be harboring algae?

Thanks for keeping up your PM logs however I do not see any recent test data. Are you still at 90 CYA?

No ladder. As far as the main drain I removed the cover and cleaned in there as well. I check the FC four times a day. Would do more but but running low again on R-0871 regent. Already burned through 5 oz. Definitely wasn’t prepared to test this much or I would invested in the 16 oz bottle.

So, it is likely that you just need to check and replace FC more often to make this work quicker.

You can also use a 5ml sample of pool water, every drop is 1FC. This will reduce reagent use. Always use the 10ml sample, .5FC/drop for the OCTLT.

To be fair, a week is not very long at doing a slam. I know it probably feels that way but lots of them take several weeks or even longer if they were really neglected.

Not leaving just work 16 hours a day. So figured I would not be able keep up on slam level. As far as testing I’m just doing FC and CC. Figured testing everything else would result in an inaccurate reading.
But talking to my wife and with her help I will try to continue the slam. Won’t have enough time to test but will take the highest average of the amount of bleach I’ve been adding morning and night and just continue doing that. Will be able to resume testing this coming Saturday and continue all the following week. Crazy this pool is this dirty. It’s always been super clean and clear. Guess you never know the amount of trash that’s in your pool water

Thanks for the info. Didn’t know I could do a 5ml sample. Definitely would save on the regents.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on using bleach form the pool store. Just been getting 2.5 gal jugs refilled but my wife suggested that maybe they were selling inferior bleach. Maybe injecting some algae in it to sell more algicide. 😂 Funny thing is, every time I go in he tells me what I’m doing won’t work and keeps trying to sell me black algicide. And of course a $40 bottle of metal control, to probably combat the metals in the algicide. Crazy I use to trust these clowns a couple of years ago. Just use them now for salt and bleach. Oh and an occasional water sample, for laughs of course, to see how far off they are. There is only one test that is usually always in agreement with my testing, calcium hardness. Everything is off by a mile.

You can SLAM while working long days. If it stretches a bit longer from infrequent adds, guess what??? You're not babysitting it frustrated that you're watching the grass grow. :)

Dose when you get home and before you leave. If anyone else is around it would take you 5 mins to teach them the FC test and poolmath so they can help too.

Well I hope that is not true. It appears you are getting LC from Pinch A Penny (Only store I know that sells in 2.5 gallon jugs). I have found their LC always fresh because they fill from a stock tank and that tank is replenished often. With FL weather I would assume use of LC is still going strong so I would be confident that the LC is fresh.

Thanks for the info. Definitely going to do it and show the wife how to do the test.

You’re good. You would be correct. Just happens to be the closest store to me. Going to get jugs refilled today. Thanks for your insight. Seems like the best deal. Current cost of $8.90 for 2.5 gals of 10.5% sodium hypochlorite. Compared to the cheap bleach at Walmart which has a lower percentage of 7.5% in a 121 oz bottle, which I would end up using more.

Couple of question on adjusting some levels. Think I already know the answer “No”. But just asking to make sure. So I know can not take an accurate reading on ph or alkaline during the slam but I usually have to add about 2-3 cups per week of acid to lower ph. I have not added anything except a week ago during the start of slam. Should I add some? Second should I adjust cya? It was 90 ppm but has dropped to 50 ppm. Not sure if the high FC is effecting the test. Probably a benefit right now to me. Having lower cya. I do have a swg that is currently off until I reach the end of slam. So I guessing it’s ok to just bring it back up to 70-80 when the slam is over.

I would not add acid. Not critical at this time.

I would leave the CYA as is unless you see abnormal FC loss after the SLAM is complete. This time of year the UV impact is far less.

Update on slam, two weeks as of today and still losing 6ppm of FC overnight. Don’t know why I’m having this much loss. Have no visible algae. Pool crystal clear.
