Pentair VSF and Ultratemp heater shut off at same time

Haven’t yet, don’t have meter. Electricians going to look at it tomorrow.

Main House feeds my detached garage that is about 200’ away. Detached garage has a 100amp panel feeding pool panel. Pool panel sits on back of garage, about 24’ from panel. I don’t know what size he used from garage to pool panel.

House to shop is fed with 2-2-2-4 aluminum

You have to know the total load and the total distance.

There are multiple calculators that can figure out the voltage drop and minimum wire size required.

The voltage drop should be less than 3%.

The maximum allowable voltage drop is about 7.2 volts at 240 volts or 6.9 volts starting at 230 volts.

Put the volt meter on the lugs and see what happens when the heat pump turns on.

A hard start kit might be helpful.

This might be the correct Hard Start Kit for the heat pump (Verify to be sure).

A good HVAC tech will have a suitable hard start kit available that will work for your unit.

Examples of other Ultratemp wire damage.

T1 and T2 are the incoming power wires.

L1, L2 and L3 go to the compressor.

L1(red) goes to the main run windings. L2(black) goes to common, and L3(purple) goes to the start windings.

Note that 1 "ton" of heating or cooling is 12,000 btu/hr, so a 120,000 btu/hr heater is a "10 ton" unit.

The term comes from 1 ton of ice melting or freezing in 24 hours and the amount of heat required to be added or removed from the water to accomplish this.

A soft start kit might be a better choice.

See what your HVAC tech recommends.

10 tons is a big unit, so you might have trouble finding a hard start or soft start kit rated for 10 tons.

You might need to run a bigger dedicated line to the heat pump, but the electrician can advise you about that.

If you are getting more than about 6 to 7 volts of voltage drop after starting during normal run, then you will likely need a new line if the amperage is within spec.

If the amperage is too high, then that needs to be addressed.

Looks like the electricians swapped the cable from the heater to the panel with a larger one. Ran for 24 hours and got pool up to temp after. Now it went back to what it was doing before and kicking off. Going to have them back out.
