I had a critter eat through the cable of my actuator this winter. My pool is not open yet can I remove the cover to fix the wiring without the valve opening?

Thanks

On another note anybody have any suggestions on how to stop this from happening again? Maybe hot pepper spray?

Matt posted a few pics after tearing into one of these. It may help. I don't know how to keep it from happening other than running the wire inside conduit. If you have several valves this may not be real practical.

If the cables run along the ground (most do), raise them up. In areas that have a lot of small "critters" I usually will run the cable thru some non-metallic flex conduit. Home Depot usually has 25' rolls of 1/2" for about $25.00. It is available by the foot as well. I seal the ends with silicone, but that's not always necessary. I've seen it in metal flex as well (usually aluminum) but I keep the other stuff on my truck so don't know the cost.

Where it was chewed through was 1.5 ft above ground about an inch from where cable exited valve. Must not of tasted too good because they left about an inch piece on the ground.

Found more damage where the wires run along the ground. Took out both my actuators.

Your problem was caused by animals chewing on the wires.

I'm not sure why that's the builder's fault unless you think that the builder or their employees are the ones who chewed on the wires.

Can you get the builder's dental records to see if the teeth marks can be matched to the builder or their employees?

It's more about running unprotected wires along the ground. Beyond just animal damage they can be stepped on pinched seems like a poor practice.

I can see both sides of the coin on this one. Yes, running control wiring through conduit makes everything look clean and neat and does add a certain layer of protection against the elements. But, if you ever add to or modify the equipment, or, if equipment needs to be repaired or replaced, trying to pull wiring through a conduit is a royal PITA.

I would say that at the very least a good contractor should bundle wiring up using zip ties and maybe the soft wiring loom that I linked to and run the wiring so that it stays off the ground. Just leaving wires exposed and on the ground is sloppy and careless workmanship.

Fixed all my wiring today. And also realized I could retime my actuator from 90 to 180 which allows one of my water features to work better by shutting off the returns when it's on. Thanks for all the help All in it took me about an hour and half that was removing the three dozen tie raps and about a half a roll of electrical tape. I ended up using the cable wrap recommended above and I used Velcro tie wraps to secure everything. Not only does it look professional should keep out the critters and easy to maintain.
