Pentair cartridge recommendation

I have no experience, but I am pretty sure that the bands being broken is fairly common and not much of a concern.

If you maintain proper chemistry, the carts should last 5+ years.

I have seen a few members that prefer the Pleatco carts over the OEM.

I have a Pentair clean and Clear Plus cartridge filter. Model CCP 420.

What replacement cartridges do you recommend?
Also how often should cartridges be replaced? Mine are 2 years old and some of the bands are broken.

I wouldn't consider broken bands to be cause to replace the cartridge. The bands are there to help prevent the pleats from bunching together. Also to keep the pleats from coming away from the center core and coming "unpleated" and falling off the core. I wouldn't do anything, just keep an eye on it. If you are concerned, you could put a long zip tie or one of those velcro straps around the cartridge.

The cartridges should last a few seasons if not abused. Just don't do anything that would cut or poke a hole in the media. Don't use floc as it could gum up the filter.

Thank you for the advice.
Does anyone recommend having an extra set of cartridges to swap out when cleaning the filter? That way you can swap the dirty cartridges and put in the clean ones so you don't have to turn in your equipment off for several hours.
I read that soaking cartridges in dishwashing liquid helps to remove the oil's from the cartridge element.

I clean my filter cartridges once a year in the sping. Only takes an hour or so. I would not think having another set around is really necessary.

You can use dishwasher detergent or TSP if you get oil buildup. Get a trash can the cart's will fit.

Take care.

When the time comes, I definitely prefer the Pleatco cartridges over the OEM Pentair cartridges. Easier to clean, last longer between cleanings and cheaper and I'd bet 3 bucks that it is impossible for my pool water to be any clearer than it is every day.

I do prefer to have a spare set of cartridges. I clean the filter in spring and fall when I am running all day for solar heating. I like to swap cartridges quickly, clean the dirty ones, let them dry completely and clean them one more time. I seem to get a little more dirt out after they dry. Then I'm all set for another quick change when needed.

This is my first pool and here is what I did when cleaning my filters for the first time. Researched and shopped for filters, I also have the Pentair 420. I took pookdv's advise and ordered Pleatco cartidges. The price through Amazon was the best. The reason I ordered new filters is, I did not want to get my housing apart to find I had a bad cartridge and then not have one. I had never had it apart before. Since the old ones are ok I now have an extra set.

Is it OK to have cartridges dry and that won't damage them?

As pooldv stated ---

let them dry completely and clean them one more time

Storing the cartridges dry will not harm them. You do need a place to store them so they will not get torn.

Take care.
