Hi All,

We are about to install the equipment for our new pool and our sales representative is pushing chlorine with ozone system. They are saying if we went for salt it would void our warranty…

“The cost difference for a salt system is approximately $4,000.00. Its not a cost difference, but an add on. You still need a chlorinator because salt doesn’t work in colder water temps (start up). Your liner will be significantly impacted with a salt system and your heater life will be reduced. Any issues caused by salt are NOT covered under warranty."

We are now also going for an auto cover and I have read that ozone won’t do much for a pool as the sun can offer the same benefits. Now we will be covering the pool whenever we are not using it would the Ozone system be a better option for us?

Also does anyone have experience of an ozone system and if so does this system remove the chlorine smell and feel?

Thanks in advance.

Just as a data point for you, our vinyl liner pool was installed in 2004 and included a SWCG (AquaRite). 20 years later (most of that time using care methods taught here), we still have the original liner and there has been no salt damage to anything.

Your builder either doesn’t know what he talking about and just repeating builder folklore, or he is lying, trying to get you to buy more profitable products (I’m guessing it’s likely the former).

Thanks that is good to know. Is there a better SWCG to purchase and does it depend on location/climate/size of pool?

Would I still need a chorinator with a salt system?

What do you mean your salt was over 2000?
SWCG uses salt to make chlorine. You keep about 3000-4000 ppm of salt for the generator to work. When I installed the SWCG, the salt level in the pool was already 2000ppm. When you add chlorine (liquid or otherwise), and muriatic acid, you add salt. A chlorine pool is a salt pool...

Most pool builders push them. We recommend you use liquid chlorine or a floating trichlor dispenser during the time the SWCG will not generate due to low water temperatures. I suspect that will not be much time for you as you will open the pool and keep it covered which helps warm the water. You will likely close the pool prior to the water temperature dropping below 50F or so.

I was sent this by the pool company, is it accurate?
A bunch of marketing blather to sell their product.

I realize all this info can be intimidating, but most questions are addressed here.

It’s also important to note that TFP doesn’t sell anything, unlike companies that put out “information” like you linked.

Is there a negative to having one and would it make it easier than using liquid or a floating dispenser?

If you plan to have a heater you definitely do not want the chlorinator. When pump is off the acidic water can feed back to the heater and destroy it.

You dont need an inline chlorinator or ozone. A $10 floater from walmart works the same as the fancy chlorinator without the risks of the inline unit. You can DIY a salt chlorine generator for $1500 so $4k is pretty steep.
