We are under construction. This site has been super helpful, I appreciate reading over tips and things others have done. So, we've never had a pool...and we have no pool building skills to speak of...but sure, why cant we do it ourselves? :)
Our friend designs DIY pools for people all over (and he was a builder), so he's been very helpful guiding us along in the process. This is what we are doing:

18x32 Sport pool (no spa). 4-6-4 depth. I read so many opinions on depth choices, we are happy with this choice. We wanted to be able to swim and float, maybe a water game, jumping in (no diving).

We have secured all of the subs so far, we've already got the hole dug and plumbing is in preliminary stages. We got hit with A LOT of rain...so I hope to get going again tomorrow.

Here is what we are planning with equipment:
Intelliflo 2 Variable speed
2 Intellibrite Color
3 sheer descents
We are undecided on doing a heater at all (most people don't use theirs here) but if we do, we'll do a heat pump. Gas is out--it's not worth doing.
Automatic Cover--likely a Coverstar--we are just working out some options on the lid choices.

We'll be doing a simulated Travertine at the waterline and up the bond beam--no real "bling" I know, but we love the colors in Travertine.

pool plan 2.jpgpool 1.jpg
Here is our original plan, but of course we have changed it a bit. We're planning to create an extended deck on that upper bond beam. It will go back about 10 feet and it's 10 feet wide, and the steps down on either side will be wider than the image here--each step will be 3 feet and there will be a sheer decent (for a total of 3 decent).

Let me know if I've missed any details, I appreciate going through this with everyone!

ut,

Just wanted to say Welcome to TFP.. A Great resource for all your pool questions... :lovetfp:

I like your pool. Sometimes simple is plenty. Good choice on your depth selection.

Now it the time to determine how you plan to chlorinate your pool.

Have you given this any thought?

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim!
Yes, we like the simplicity. We're going with chlorine (not a SWG) I think this is what you're asking? We're going with the PENTAIR QUAD DE FILTER 188592. We are undecided still on the heat pump--we may wait a year and then put it if, if we decide we'll actually use it. And we are still trying to decide on the finish--we'll go with plaster or quartz. We love the pebble finish, but the costs are crazy here--it's just not worth it to us. We want a bright blue water color (no green & not dark) so any input if you have done quartz, what color you love is appreciated.

The process has been a lot to learn along the way, but we've been pretty lucky to find subs to help us. We definitely appreciate the builders--they deal with a lot that most people don't even realize--but we love the adventure so far.

Since you know you'll want to play games in the pool, go ahead and plan for umbrella type sleeves where you can insert the volleyball net poles. Find your net and get the specific measurements for the poles before you finish the deck.

Yippee :flower:

I've been thinking about this---since I've got the bond beam with the deck behind it on the one side, that will mean that the pole (if centered) will be about 20 inches higher on one side--assuming I put the sleeve in the deck on both sides. I'm not sure how that will work with a traditional net, though I imagine they have options for one pole to be longer or something. They are working on plumbing! Yay for good weather!

Simple fix for that, is you put a "Rope Anchor" in the side of the pool below the pole.
You tie top line to pole, bottom line to anchor and can keep net level.

Nice! Thanks for that!! I'll have to research it a bit--if I place the anchor below the waterline tile, I wonder if that would be too low?? I'm not sure I'd want to place it "in" the tile because that's a feature wall too (waterfall right there etc...).

Progress is still happening! They are doing my wall too, which is massive. Plumbing in pool moving along.

Thanks! It's about an acre. The back half (behind the mini-mountain) will be left for now, we'll use that for horses or what ever other critter my kids bring home, and a future RV garage. There was supposed to be another arch of grass behind the pool, but I'm over the grass already, I don't want any more! :D

LOVE that picture! How big is your lot?? It looks huge!

The landscaping you already have is neat! Will you do that all around the pool when you are done?

LOL on the grass! I SO feel you! I have 6.5 acres!!!! Good thing I am a teacher and have the summers off to mow!

Critters your kids bring home?????? It is the critters I bring home  There is not telling what our shelter will call for me to come pick up and make all better.

Hey there!
I've got my finger on the trigger for the equipment, I just wanted any opinions...
We've decided (last minute to go with SWG) so here goes....(all Pentair)
Intelliflo 2VSP
Easytouch 4 (pool only--we dont have a spa)
Quad 100 DE filter
2 Intellibrite 5G color
3 sheer decent (almond) (2) 18" & (1) 36"
Auto fill
2 wall anchors (a TFP member suggestion--for volleyball)
Pentair Intellichlor IC60

I'm not doing a heater right now--aside from that--am I missing anything you notice or anything you'd suggest switching out?
As for tile, I'm leaning towards the NPT Simulated Travertine, this will go around the waterline as well as the raised bond beam (behind sheers). There isnt a lot of "bling" to it, but I wanted something with color variations--and this has that. It's also polished, I like that.

ut,

You might want to look at a combo package for the EasyTouch8, plus IC60, plus valve actuators. Cheaper than buying them separately.

I know you have a simple set up, but the Easytouch 4 only comes with three user programmable relays. The 4th relay must be used to control the IC60.

If you use one relay for your pool light, one relay for your pad light, and one relay for landscape lighting, you are out of relays. I know because I only have an ET-4.. Sigh!!!

Suggest you look at SunPlay's website to start comparing P/N's and pricing.... http://www.sunplay.com/pentair-easytouch-control-systems

Thanks,

Jim R.

Great tip on the 8--although I don't see any packages with the 8 and the IC60 (for a single body--pool only). Regardless, I'll see about adding that--thanks!!

ut,

You can use the Pool and Spa model, without any issues... Other than cost, there is no real advantage to the Single Body System... The hardware appears to be identical to me. I suspect just different software..

Not sure how far you have gotten. It looks like they plumbed the floor drain in a line. For safely each drain should be the same distance from the suction line. So a T.
As for the anchor, you just put it in the side wall below the tile line, height doesn't matter that much as height of the net will be determined by how high you tie it on the pole. The lower line just secures it, adds tension. Easy4, and IC40 are plenty for your pool.

Good to know the IC40 will be fine, that's what I was thinking too! I'm not sure how they plumbed the floor drain, I do know that the codes here are much different than most areas--very loose. Progress is good, rebar should be finished in the next day or so (they have to add a little more). Apparently one of the builders I didn't hire is disgruntled, I have the City show up telling me someone reported that I was using unlicensed workers....jokes on them...they ARE licensed.
I cant upload photos--where can those be added?

LOL the joke is on him!!!! I know you checked their paper work before they ever headed through your gate!

Or you can use Photo bucket or such using the IMG code. I think there is a thread you can search for telling how to do it. Use the search box at the top of the page.
