Opening the pool - relatively new at this

Hi Folks, I plan to get my pool opened this week, and will be taking the help of a pool guy (the same who closed the pool). I don't plan to do a DIY approach for now, since I (1) don't have the bandwidth (2) am still too new at this and not confident. What I wanted to ask, is what kind of things to make sure are done or not done at the pool opening. And what things should I try to learn.

For instance - Should he use super shock? I was told that it's not a good idea to use supershock, and use liquid chlorine instead. As far as I know that's the only chemical he will be using. What else should I keep an eye on?

Liquid Chlorine is preferred as anything granular or solid adds either CYA or Calcium along with the chlorine. Unless you know your water tests can absorb that into the numbers without problem, we prefer using the simplest of ingredients that add nothing unwanted/unneeded.

I don't see a good test kit in your siggy line.... do you have one?? www.troublefreepool.com/wiki/index.php?title=Pool_Test_Kits

You/he shouldn't *anything* without a reason to. Pool services/stores just love to blindly dump things in......... many times they can't even tell you what it is, or it's strength.

My GC looked me dead in the eyes and told me his liquid shock was 99%. I bet him a paycheck it was 12.5%.

Get accurate test results and come ask, we will guide you.

Above you've already seen a taste of how we feel about so-called "experts" doing things for us and our pools. But to help answer your specific question, refer to this page. It is a good summary of what needs to be done.
