You will need to close the pool and not rely on freeze protect. It’s possible to keep the spa open but not the pool. To winterize the blowers I turn them on and let it blow the line clear then plug the return or water feature it’s running. Harder to do with spas and a blower.

Is freeze protect unreliable, or just not sufficient enough in the northeast?

I don’t have any pools that do NOT get winterized.
Yet.
 
I don’t even mess with freeze protect or flow monitoring when programming an Omni. They cause more problems and we just make sure to close pools and make sure customers know the importance of properly closing a pool either by us. Which we prefer or a reputable company.
