Obtaining & maintaining adequate FC w Intex ECO 5110, please help

CYA testing +/- 20ppm is okay. Read CYA Testing - Further Reading
This article is so helpful. I wasn’t sure if I just had SLAM-brain eyeballs or being obsessive or what. Having read that article validates all that uncertainty, haha, phew— and with productive way to move forward more confidently. Thank you

Hmm, so do I use 50 or 60 to determine my SLAM goal? Or maybe check CYA again before the sun goes down. Maybe I’ll drain and dilute a little more too, hmm.

That is no harm with CYA in always rounding up to the higher number you think it is when setting a FC level. All that happens is you use a few ppm more chlorine.

Pouring rain stopped. Went w CYA 60 and target FC 24 overnight. Definitely hard to get above 21. OCLT result in am, hopefully won’t rain again. Will keep you posted. Thanks, TFP!

Seems to have rained again at least a little overnight.

OCLT 1.5 (but some rain)
FC 20.5
CC 0.6-1.0
Water (and tubes): super clear

Gonna let it drift down and recheck prior to heatwave swim later in the day. I figure you’re gonna say I’m in the last lap but not quite there yet. I’d love to be done if you think I’m close enough. The CC isn’t very precise w a 10cc sample. Running low on reagent, ha. Thoughts?

Thank you, TFP brain!

could there be a sampling error? I wait 30-60 minutes after the last bleach addition to take my first OCLT sample, which should be enough, esp bc such a small pool, but we have a small filter pump too so I don’t know if it’s fully turning the water over in the time frame. Also, even though I sample before sunrise, it is light out already, so maybe there’s some UV effect?

If your CC was 0 and a OCLT of 1 to 2 then maybe but you have CC of 1 and a loss of 4, that is not UV or anything else, Chlorine is killing what is in your pool.. just keep up the great work you are doing and it will get there... :)

At 1,000 gallons why don’t you maintain it like a temporary pool and dump the water and refill with NYC finest clean water? You are in NY, not CA.

Interesting. Look forward to checking it out, thank you! It is a temporary pool— we drain and fold it up in the fall. Last year we just used the SWG and it was so easy, not this year…

So, I just couldn’t understand how such a small pool with clear clear water was requiring such a long SLAM. Then I figured to check the cartridge filter, which I changed when I started, but still… And it was covered in yuck. Replaced it.
So, 🤞, that tonight will be the last.

Pre-OCLT FC = 16 (CYA 40 from yesterday)…

you have a cart filter, I thought you had the sand filter.. Those cart filters are not helping you at all.. They are just so small and probably need cleaned daily.. how many times a day have you been cleaning them?

During the SLAM I hadn’t cleaned it at all :( But put in a new fresh one at the beginning. The instructions are to change them once every 1-2 wks. I’ll usually clean them once a wk or so and change them when they aren’t cleanable. But now I’m sure they have been impeding my SLAM. The OCLT was much better after I changed it.

:( :( :(

What do you suggest at this point? Does having a cart filter change my endpoint criteria? I increased back to 16-17 this AM and plan to check CC again before today’s swim. Also my 1000gph Intex pump is only supposed to be run max 12h/d, so I’m concerned it may crash any hour now

it is just a REALLY small filter.. I had a 100 sq ft cart filter on my 650 gallon hot tub, 3 times bigger than the one you have...

How many filters do you have, I would pull it every day and put a cleaned one in then clean the one you just pulled out with chlorine and water and let it sit in the sun for 2 days.. that would require 3 filters rotating.. :)

I think you are close now that you found the offending filter ....

Stop the SLAM Process.

Go swim and enjoy your pool.

If your pool turns green again this season dump the water and fill it with fresh.

This effort is a waste of your time and money.

Thanks. If I were to stop now and enjoy, at what point (ie what FC) would I start checking (and correcting) the other chemistries again? And at what FC would I turn back on the SWG and for how long of a daily cycle? (Two hours should be more than adequate, it’s only a 1000gal pool, but maybe I should restart it at longer cycle length given a close but not fully complete SLAM?)

That’s a good idea. I didn’t know I needed to change them so frequently with such a high FC level. Also, I wondered if cleaning, instead of replacing anew, may have been perpetuating the offending/FC-eating process. How do I know when a filter is past point of cleaning and should be replaced?
