I am just over a week in of caring for the pool. It has “staining” on the calmer end that comes and goes throughout the day. By end of day it spreads across the bottom of the pool, by morning it is only on the edge. Water has been clear. It does. It come off with the brush but we could scrub it off with a chlorine puck which led me to believe it is organic. I started the SLAMming process 6 days ago. Still losing anywhere from 1-7PPM overnight. The past few days I’ve been losing between 1-2.
I started SLAMming at 35 ppm due to my high CYA(89). THEN two nights ago I started SLAMming at 55 ppm because I’m thinking maybe it is mustard algae which calls for a higher SLAM????
Basically, I’m wanting to know if there is a way to test what type of algae this is. It’s obviously hard to keep the pool at 55+ ppm and I’m 20+ gal of chlorine in already.
I know I need to drain some and refill but living in the desert(Las Vegas) we can’t just drain our pool and refill it in a few days due to excess water charges. Our pool water is about 1 year old as well so I hate to drain and refill if we can get a year or two out of it.

I am not sure if I should keep going or throw in the towel or what? How long does it typically take? Does losing less ppm overnight mean progress or is that just wishful thinking? I am about ready for us to just swim with the algae, if that’s even what it is. Haha!
