Newbie - SWG not working in 3rd year

Also I dug up my pool's paperwork to get exact measurements and think that was my main error.

Basically if I don't include the spa and sun shelf area - then it becomes a 35X20, depth of 3-7 (i had thought it was 8) - pool calculator says 18750 gallons.

Am I right to exclude the sun shelf and spa for chemical purposes?

The pool paperwork say an estimated 33000 gallons but think that's a super simple calculation that probably incorrectly counts the issue of the sun shelf and spa.

Okay, 56 oz of 12.5% added to 18,000 gal raises FC 3 points so that makes sense. The spa doesn't add much so you can probably ignore that. I assume the sun shelf is shallow so it also doesn't add much. If it was me, I figure each of the separately, but I like math.

I think my method was just wrong on the first test - I wasn't getting deep enough in the water so maybe was just getting surface water which was lower FC. This would explain why my test and the test at Leslie's both showed 1.5. It didn't make any sense to me bc I'd boosted for nearly two days through the SWG. So think its very possible it was more like 6 and then the gallon I added jumped it to 13.5

At this point, I'm just thrilled that I got 3 from the last FC addition and it actually makes sense - so hopefully my method has improved. Pool looks great and CC appears to be zero. Will do another overnight test just to be sure but feeling a lot more reassured now.

I had a service before so finally learning about the pool, its fun when things work!

Brushing is very important as it scratches off the protective oily skin/barrier (biofilm) that would otherwise keep the chlorine from getting to the actual algae/other nasties. So I'd try to do what you are comfortable with. Are there family members or nearby teens you could ask to help?

Long term, but not sure what budget situation you have, a robotic cleaner like the Warrior SE ($700) will scrub your walls for you while also vacuuming up from the bottom of the pool. Incredibly convenient and I justified mine by comparing to the savings from firing the pool service who serviced the pool for the old owners.

yeah I have one of those robots precisely for that reason. am trying to run it multiple times a day as a substitute
Great. Please put what robot you have in your signature. I was going to recommend you get one -- but you all ready have one!

So I've been slamming since Wed and my pool is still absorbing Chlorine. My CYA readings are now closer to 20, did add some water. Am just wondering if my CYA is too low for SLAM and would it work better if I raised it. Most of the time the pool is covered.

Honestly its crystal clear and the CC is <.5, its just that the Chlorine keeps dropping well over 1. Over the last 24 hrs FC fell 3 (13 to 10). Am just wondering if there is else I should be doing (like correcting the CYA 20, phosphates (over 4000 from leslies) or the TA (250)) or just keep doing what I'm doing and give it more time. I was going to address those only after the FC had stabilized.

I do live in a very wooded area so we always get insects in the water, even with the cover bc of the two holes at the end. I've also never really done this in three years so maybe there is a lot built up even thought it looks quite good?

Your doing good and let the chlorine do its thing. Takes more time then you have patience for but keep it up and it'll get to that point. You should up the CYA to 30 as UV will eat away at it leaving less for algae.

Also check any nooks and crannies where the lurgy might be living. Behind lights, stairs, corners etc.

BenB I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If they are reducing the FC doesn't that mean there is exposure? Then when it stabilizes then whatever algae is sanitized?
You are correct but since the exposure there isn't great at all it may hold your pool on slam longer due to constantly reducing the FC. Once you eradicate those problem areas then your dealing pretty much with the main body of water.

Is 3 PPM normal for a covered pool? I had thought it was more like 1?

I'm not yet passing the OCLT although I guess it depends on how many hours the test is supposed to be for. This morning I lost the least yet at 1.5 but that was for about 12 hours. At this point it feels like progress so am going to keep going but would be good to understand if I'm doing the OCLT test for too many hours.
