Newbie Intro and Possible build-Cincinnati Ohio

Boy- that was an eye opener! Communication between all parties is essential. I was ready to see the design, and sign on..

The pool was in the wrong spot, then the details began to be contingent on how much slope, etc. I feel like some of this could have been avoided if the PB would have shared the design vs. getting someone to watch the kids, go out on a Saturday to the pool store just to see a 3D rendering of something other than what we talked about.

It’s for the better we spend more time on planning and details now instead of when it’s too late. He is coming out to “shoot grade” this week and see what will be required for a retaining wall, etc.

Now my wife wants an inground spa. It is totally stand alone from the pool equipment. It wouldn’t spill over, so it could be used separately of the pool. -Year round.

I think the pergola will be axed, the pool brought closer to the deck, spa in between and use the deck as the covered area.

My wife was excited the project finally greenlighted after 10 years though.

Ugh... more to come [emoji4]

Has she sat in a concrete spa for a while versus a fiberglass self-contained model? Appearance is totally different but so if the comfort.

Sorry your meeting was not as smooth as hoped.

 Todd's face when he sat down to see the design and heard the other stuff not even talked about before----------NOT good. I would think about calling back one or two of the other PBs you talked to before. If they get it this wrong now.........We got ya and will support what ever you decide to do.

Kim- in fairness to the PB, it was about a month ago he was at the house casually looking at our back yard, it was snowing, and we did talk about a lot of different ideas. This was one of the ideas that requires moving our playset. We discussed having it in the middle and I thought that’s the design. Much to my surprise (and his) my wife said she wanted it on the far right. So that’s why I say all parties. We spent about an hour going back and forth in Pool Suite - I assume- looking at placement , options etc.

The inground spa is a fiberglass model that has its own pump and heater combo deal next to the pool equipment.

We are having trouble with backyard layout and over all vision ? Do landscape architects fit the bill here?

I would avoid the retaining wall. You're building a concrete structural vessel...use that for retaining it even better yet, make it a negative edge.

Todd, thanks for explaining the timing and the overall reason for the mix up. That does make a lot of sense.

So what I see you saying is you are now thinking of putting the pool closer to the already built structure. Let do this.......take some new pics and share them. Take on from the back of your property looking at the house and patio. Take one from here and there so we get a good over all look at what you are dealing with. Make sure the pretty structure can be seen.

Tell us where YOU think the pool and the "slice of heaven" will be in relation to the house and structure.

I would like to see and hear more about this "slice of heaven"............how would you service it when needed with it being in ground? Do you have one in mind or are you just thinking of putting a regular spa in ground?

Kim- I’ll take some pictures, I appreciate the help!

In regard to the spa- it sounds like a miniature pool. He said imagine the guts (pump, heater, control board) of a freestanding hot tub in a separate location. There is a control pad on a wire that can be mounted remotely. He was getting the brand and model for me. The fiberglass tub has the plumbing routed to it. It does seem nice to have an in- ground spa separately, vs one integrated with the pool.

I like the SOH concept. Looking forward to seeing the execution. Cantilever coping is a clean look but not for everyone. Nothing is I suppose. Bluestone coping is relatively cheap in this region though hot if that’s on the approved list.

The PB is coming out to shoot the grade tomorrow and redo the design.

Are there any pool design software that I could use to play around in? I want to create some ideas but can’t draw on paper well enough for my wife to see the vision.

Kim- here are some photos that may help. I think we want to do a patio from the deck out to the pool area.

The concrete would come up to the steps, then extend down into the pool are where that group of trees are. Water line starts to the right of tree closest to deck. Spa in between pool and deck. The retaining wall will have to be in front of play set. I am wondering if we curve it all the way to the corner of the deck and have a step down to the pool level. Upper patio, then lower patio with pool deck.

Does anyone know how this setup would be done? Is this 2 separate pours? One for border and one for broom finish?

Kim Thank you! This picture is really terrible, but I loosely staked out in 18 x 36 rectangle. I ran out of string. This will be about 5 feet more to the left. The string going left to right was just to see how much slope there is in the yard. Our builder asked us to figure out where we wanted the pool placed side to side so he could use the transit.

Brian, thank you for the feedback on sketch up. I have requested a 30 day trial of the software you recommended. I will have to download it at home on my laptop. The pool builder is going to redo the design, but I don’t think my wife really knows what she wants and where. I am trying to have a solution to build a bunch of different scenarios without asking the pool builder. If he makes every change, we have to meet with him to see the changes. He won’t send us the designs until we sign the contract. Using the pool builder as a design resource is a bit constraining.

That’s why I was also considering a landscape designer but figured I would try my hand at the software.

Inkedspa and pool placement_LI.jpg

Okay here is my very poor drawing but it will support my words.....................see the blue spot? That is the spa. I see it level with the decking. It will be raised some for this to happen but I think it will look great that way and provide seating in that area so a win-win. The decking will go on the other side of the spa to provide a walkway around it.

See how the decking pushes out way from the spa on the yard side? That is for a fire pit or such in that area. Lowes has some that are VERY pretty. I like the portable ones the best as they can be moved as wanted.

The pool will be on the other side of the spa. I would have that decking go all the way down to the pool and keep going all the way around the pool. That will tie everything together.

What this does is leave some yard for playing!

I hope this helps. If you don't use my ideas that is fine. I just want to give you something to start with.
