So I have a new Pentair VSF3.0 pump controlled by my IntelliTouch i7. Since install, I am getting random pump shut downs followed by restart 20 seconds later. Pump running low speed and no air in the pot. Happens 3-4 times a day. Checked my serial connections and all tight and low Ohms of 1.0. Pentair support is clueless and wants to replace the drive after professional diagnosis. I am thinking it is a serial comm problem as testing now with the comm cable disconnected on a manual schedule and no pump shutdowns day test 1. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.
Show us the label on the wet end of the pump. We need to the p/n for the pump .

rj,

The above posters just want to make sure that your pump does not have the SVRS option.. I doubt that you do..

Do you have the 3 HP VSF IntelliFlo or do you have the new IntelliFlo3 VSF??

We need to know the specific pump that you have.

This sounds like a known RS-485 com port issue when the wrong F/W is installed in the control head.. Using the pump's display and menu, tell us what F/W your pump has.

Thanks,

Jim R.

rj,

What is the pump "Type" when you look at your automation??

Does it show VS or VSF... ??

Should be something like.. Menu, Settings, Pump, (Pump #1 or 2 maybe) then you should see Pump Type and speeds and circuits below that.

Like this if you have ScreenLogic..

Note... If you change it, it will wipe out all of your pump speeds.. and you will have to re-enter them..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Call Pentair Support. They have had various problems with Intelliflo3 compatibility.

Pentair Support can push firmware updates to the pump through the app.

Pentair does not publish pump firmware updates for us to know all they have available.

Intellitouch i7 firmware is 1.180 at about 5 years old. Pump set as Intelliflo VSF. I already called Pentair and they are stumped. No nw pump firmware that they can push.

Rj,

Try running it as "VS" and see what happens.. Keep in mind that if you change the pump Type, you will have to re-enter all your speeds..

It this were my pump, I'd also set the schedule for the Pool Circuit to 24 hours (8 am until 8 am ) and see if the problem goes away..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Going to try the VS setting first. Ran 3 days with the com port disconnected and no issues. Seems like a comm incompatability. What were the known comm issues that you mentioned?

Rj,

The problem was intermittent RS-485 com port operation.. But that was with the IntelliFlo VSF and not the IntelliFlo3.

I have never worked with the new IntelliFlo3.. But I 'think' that you can use the app or you can control by the RS-485 cable, but not both at the same time.. As a test, I'd want to make sure the app is not trying to talk with the pump, when using the com cable.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Escalate the problem with Pentair Support.

I suspect there are not that many Intelliflo3 pumps connected to IntelliTouch systems. New pumps are being installed with EasyTouch or IntelliCenter systems.

Although I think at the end Pentair will tell you IntelliTouch is obsolete and you should get the IntelliCenter upgrade kit.

well a tech came out and it is a bad upper board where the Serial port sits. Bad out of the box! Now working on a new MasterTemp heater install that does not want to communicate at all to my Intellitouch. Any Ideas as checked the jumper, did the black, green an yellow connection as red is not used for some reason. Address is 1 like the pump.

Confirm you have an IntelliTouch system and not an IntelliCenter???

Your IntelliTouch i7 is a new install?

IntelliTouch does not support RS-485 control of a MasterTemp heater. Only an IntelliCenter supports it.

well that explains it! And yes it is a five year old install intellitouch. Going to have to go back to the old school on/off connection

Ok Gurus, here is the latest on the pump issue. I had a the tech say it was a bad upper board and pentair sent a new board and mistakenly sent a new drive unit too. Replaced the board and new serial cable, same random shut down. Replaced the drive unit along with new upper board. Same issue. What is going on here as not anything else to replace? Is there a compatability issue with the older intellitouch i7 as Pentair denies this?

Ok, More interesting info. Playing around with all the comm connections and found out this. Pump will shut down after 1 min when the data connection is lost and light goes purple to green. Takes about 5 seconds to go purple on reconnection. So I disconnected all comms except the pump and house connection to Pentair Screenlogic with automation connection. The Pump shut down, connection light stayed green and pump would not turn back onwith only Screenlogic and pump connected on main board. I unplugged the automation serial adapter and pump reconnected and started. Ah, thought adapter was bad but not so. Running only the pump connected I get random shut down and immediate restart with connection light staying purple. Adding the automation adapter to the same I7intellitouch board will shut down the commuication to the pump but if I move that comm connection to the salt generator board ports I don't get the complete pump shut down anymore. So is the comm chip being flakey on the I7 board? How are the serial ports on the salt gen ports different from the main board ports as there are some small resistors on the circuit board data lines that I can see. May just need to upgrade my intellitouch...

So my new pump since day 1 has had random shut downs and restarts since install. Tech has come out and replaced the upper board and the drive unit and still doing it. He says he has 4 other pumps doing the same thing and no answers from Pentair. Pentair wants to send more techs out. Who else is having this problem??

Is your IntelliFlo3 pump connected to automation?

What firmware level does the drive show?
