Hi All,

First time poster but have been following this website and forums for a while. Great info here and I learnt so much over here, a huge thanks to all contributors.

Now my issue: I am switching from a Single speed pump to a Circupool VS pump. I installed the pump, plumbing etc and connected the wires correctly. But the Pump won’t turn on, no lights nothing at all. First I thought it could have been due to a bad timer as I was connecting the pump via a timer (that’s how the existing set up was) to the breaker so I eliminated the timer and I am running the wire directly from the Breaker to the pump but still the same issue. Checking the voltage on the breaker is reading 250 V but the reading from the terminals L1-L2 on the Pump is only giving me 125 and not 230. Reading through previous posts, I could see that the L1-L2 on the pump must read 230, is that right? If so what could be the issue? Should I replace the breaker or could it be the wires itself running from the breaker to the pump? I am struggling with this for the last 2 days, hope someone can guide me.

3,

To get 240 volts, you basically have two 120 volt lines going from the breaker to the pump.

If you measure between L1 and L2 you should get nothing, if you are missing one of the two 120 volt inputs.. If you measure L1 to ground, or L2 to ground you will usually get 120 volts, when the wiring is connected to the pump.. This is really a false reading...

What do you get when you measure between L1 and L2?

What do you get when you measure between L1 and ground?

What do you get when you measure between L2 and ground?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Thanks for your input. I think I know what the problem is. My old pump had options to run on 120 or 240 v and probably was running on 120 V because the breaker it was on is single pole. The new Circupool pump is a 230 V pump and I think I am going to need a two pole breaker. I realized that there are 2 hot wires coming into the panel so I should be good to go with a two pole breaker. Does my assessment sound right?

Post a pic of the inside of the panel where the existing single pole breaker is.
Is this panel co-located with the pool equipment?

GFCI CBs are required for all pool pumps. Preferably a Siemens QF220 or Pentair PA220GF.

It looks like your CB panel has three slots per side. A 230V CB needs two slots. It will be best to move the CB on the left side into the upper slot used by the pump.

Then, you can install the 20A GFCI CB On the left side and easily connect the CB neutral pigtail to the neutral bar on the left.

Confirm your pump wires are 12 gauge.

You must identify the white neutral wire connected to your pump and the neutral bar. That wire becomes a hot wire and must be wrapped with black electrical tape at both ends to indicate it is a hot wire and not a neutral wire. The white wire is moved from the neutral bar to the GFCI CB.
