Just trying to open the pool of a new hosue we purchased in the winter. Pool is large 55k gallons of water and i am struggling to get it right.

How are you testing your water chemistry? If you don't have a recommended test kit, order one now! Link-->Test Kits Compared
Add 3ppm of liquid chlorine until your test kit arrives. Download Pool Math, it will tell you how much to add to get 3ppm into the pool daily. Link-->PoolMath
When your kit arrives, post a full set of results and we will get you squared.

Looks like you have two posts heading the same way - I'd suggest picking one and keeping it all together there (and probably the one in Just Getting Started would make more sense !!)
