New to Pools, renovating/repairing abandoned pool?

Congrats on the new house and pool!
I know you've been focusing on the equipment and clearing tadpoles and this may be a dumb question but I'll pose it anyway. Have you checked the state of your liner? I ask because it one picture I can see that it's popped out of the track and it looks really faded. Has the liner turned to brittle hard plastic or is still "soft"? Given it's been neglected for so long, just curious on the condition of the actual liner.
Thank you! That is a good question, I actually had a pool company come out and look at it. He pulled on it and said it still had a good bit of flexibility left in it. He recommended dropping water level and trying to get the liner back in the rail before spending the money on a new one. He said it obviously still holds water so I may have a little life left in it. I do suspect it won't be too long before I have to replace it.

He did say if I needed to replace it, the cost would be around $4,000. Does that seem like a reasonable cost? Is replacing a liner something that I could attempt on my own? I have watched a couple videos, it does not look that hard, definitely not easy but appeared doable

Good, glad to hear it! I've put a few small sections of my liner back in place with the help of some folks here so it's not hard to get back in. Our liner was replaced in 2018 with a Loop Loc liner (before we bought the house) and the prior owner paid $4500 for the liner, install, and 24,000 gallons of water. 4 years later, I would say $4,000 is a good price, assuming it includes liner and install.

As painfully slow and frustrating as it is, any/all crud needs to go. Leaves, muck, debris............ all of it. It will blow through chlorine as long as it remains.

You got this. :)

@BigTuna13
Just to be sure you are understanding-
The gallon/day of bleach @kimkats suggested is just to keep things from getting worse until you have a k2006c or tf100xl & are prepared to start the SLAM Process. It’s not the cure.
Since you are going w/ a swg you will also need the k1766 salt kit. You should always verify the salt level w/ the test kit before adding any or you may end up needing to replace water. As All forms of manually added chlorine add salt to the water.
You can get one big kit w/ everything u need here by selecting the xl & salt options 👇
Now that u have some equipment that u know you are using add everything u can to your signature. 👇
If u haven’t already- download PoolMath to help u calculate chemical additions & u can toggle on “sharing” in the settings to give other members access to your logs through your profile.
As soon as your kit comes - do all the tests, post the results here & we can help you along 😊

As much of a mess as that whole place looks, it's going to be SWEET when it's all cleaned up and operational again. I'm excited for you!

I meant to post these the other day. Previous owner left 2 full test kits barely used. I have no idea how old they are, but do these go bad over time?

Look for expiration dates on the bottom of the label.

Yes, they do go bad and they should not be stretched more then a year after they expire.

Forgot to mention the equipment I ended up going with, I remeasured the pool and came up with 28k gallons.

Harris 3HP Variable Speed Pump - Harris 72522 ProForce Inground VS Variable Speed Pool Pump, 1.5 HP
Harris 31" Sand filter - Doheny's Sand Filter Tank with Valve, 31 in
Circupool RJ45 - CircuPool RJ-45 PLUS Saltwater Chlorinator | Discount Salt PoolView attachment 402872View attachment 402873
Just read your post. You would be better advised to go with a bigger cell which is the RJ60 PLUS which is a better fit for 2X capacity of a 28k gallon pool.

SOrry, I have not been updating as regularly as I planned. I got the pool clear enough to see the bottom and discovered a decent sized hole in the liner. I was originally having trouble finding a liner big enough but ended up going with Dohenys again. The liner was reasonably priced and received quickly but some of the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I will likely be looking for a new pool supplier in the future even if it costs a little more.

I received the liner last Thursday and started installing Friday after work and of course we had the worst rain we've had in months. Pool filled with water and clay that appears to have washed out from under steps. I spent all day cleaning that out Saturday and reinstalled Sunday. Liner did not sit right so I had to shift over a foot and now it fits perfect.

I have never owned a pool before but we are very proud of the transformation. I did all the install of the equipment myself (pump, filter, SWG) and me and my wife were able to install the liner ourselves. Here is the finished product.
