Hello, thought I would take a moment and introduce myself. Been lurking/reading and educating myself over the past year with the great info you all share on this site. I am a Scientist so i naturally enjoy the concepts discussed here. I have realized quicky that no amount of scientific knowledge can substitute for experience and i am so thankful i found this site. My pool has and still looks perfect and i credit all of you for that. My first issue occurred this week and i would appreciate any insight.

I've relied on pool store for testing up to this point. Two issues are no matter where i go TA and CYA are ridiculously inconsistent. Because of that, I have ordered the TF-100 kit and await its arrival.
The pool store convinced me my TA was getting low (40) and suggested i add 10 pounds of baking soda then add acid to reduce ph (measured 8). I did make a mistake and added acid first and then added the baking soda the next day. I add acid usually twice a week although i am adding a little less than i did initially. Also I added all 10 pounds of baking soda at once. Not sure that was the right thing to do. Ph was around 7.2 when i added baking soda. With all that said, my issue is since then (last Sunday) my ph has been somewhat unstable. It was perfect 7.6 during day yesterday while filter was running but strangely dropped late at night to around 7 when filter was off. Previous day ph rose to around 8 and dropped to around 7.2 late at night. Its done this regularly since i added the baking soda to raise TA. Today so far its been around 8 and has stayed there most of the day/night. Keep in mind it was around 7.2 last night. TA tested 100 today at store and ph was 8. FC was 6, CYA tested 70 today but typically tests between 70 and 100. 3300 ppm salt and CH was 280 today. Im hoping things are stabilizing today after several days of instability and was thinking of adding acid again in AM. Pool still looks perfect other than the wild swings in PH. Has anyone else experienced this after raising alkalinity? Thanks in advance!

tp,

Most SWCG pools like their pH to be about 7.8 to 8.0... Trying to keep your pH at 7.2 will be almost impossible.. The lower you try to drive the pH the harder it will fight to get back up to 7.8..

I suggest that you let it drift up.. when it get to 8.0 drop it down to 7.6..

Good job on getting your own test kit...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hello TulsaPool,

Oklahoma City here. Lovely weather today. Nice pool in your pic there! You will love your shiny new TF 100 Test Kit! I am on my third summer of pool ownership. I started out with the TF 100 Test Kit and have never looked back. Once you start doing your own testing and managing your chems with pool math, you will easily resolve all balance issues. It becomes so easy...Trouble Free even!

Stay outta the pool stores! You can't trust the willy nilly way they test water!! Make no more changes until you get your own test kit. Did you splurge and get the Speed Stir too- makes a huge difference by making testing fast and easy!

Proof- take three samples of the same water to three different pool stores. See how the results vary.

Funny you say that yes, i have taken samples to three different stores and got significantly different results. I was told to drain my pool because cya was 100. I took to two different stores to make sure and it was 60 and 80. I look forward to receiving my kit to see what it really is. I figure i am not in danger unless its consistently over 100 based on what ive read here.

And yes, i did splurge on the speed stir based on what i read here. I also got the standards to check my testing and the ph meter since i am always checking ph. I am going to take it easy on the acid and just add a little at a time and test until i get to 7.6.

Still trying to dial in my swg time and percent. Ready for more consistent weather because all this rain and ups and downs seem to require daily adjustments. My target chlorine is 3 and i have not hit it yet. Always high but i guess thats better than low. I fought off ducks for a few weeks and went a little crazy with chlorine after their visits. Btw, tried everything to keep ducks away, they didnt go away until i left my polaris pressure cleaner in the pool. I bought the dolphin m400 because the polaris did not get dirt out of pool. Thankfully though it has value as a duck deterrant. They hate that thing creeping around. Its great!

Welcome to the forum!
When you get your test kit run a full set of tests and post them here.

I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.
Thank you, i have read abcs but not the ebook. I read a lot of your posts and wanted to say thank you for taking time to share your knowledge and experience. You are reaching and helping more people than u probably know.

Yes, will do just that. Ive been thinking i am too aggressive trying to keep ph down and overshoot targets often. I guess its a new pool thing and im tring to keep a perfect 7.6 at all times but thats probably not realistic. Thank u for taking time to let me know whats normal and how to manage it more effectively.
