Hello, thought I would take a moment and introduce myself. Been lurking/reading and educating myself over the past year with the great info you all share on this site. I am a Scientist so i naturally enjoy the concepts discussed here. I have realized quicky that no amount of scientific knowledge can substitute for experience and i am so thankful i found this site. My pool has and still looks perfect and i credit all of you for that. My first issue occurred this week and i would appreciate any insight.
I've relied on pool store for testing up to this point. Two issues are no matter where i go TA and CYA are ridiculously inconsistent. Because of that, I have ordered the TF-100 kit and await its arrival.
The pool store convinced me my TA was getting low (40) and suggested i add 10 pounds of baking soda then add acid to reduce ph (measured 8). I did make a mistake and added acid first and then added the baking soda the next day. I add acid usually twice a week although i am adding a little less than i did initially. Also I added all 10 pounds of baking soda at once. Not sure that was the right thing to do. Ph was around 7.2 when i added baking soda. With all that said, my issue is since then (last Sunday) my ph has been somewhat unstable. It was perfect 7.6 during day yesterday while filter was running but strangely dropped late at night to around 7 when filter was off. Previous day ph rose to around 8 and dropped to around 7.2 late at night. Its done this regularly since i added the baking soda to raise TA. Today so far its been around 8 and has stayed there most of the day/night. Keep in mind it was around 7.2 last night. TA tested 100 today at store and ph was 8. FC was 6, CYA tested 70 today but typically tests between 70 and 100. 3300 ppm salt and CH was 280 today. Im hoping things are stabilizing today after several days of instability and was thinking of adding acid again in AM. Pool still looks perfect other than the wild swings in PH. Has anyone else experienced this after raising alkalinity? Thanks in advance!
