New pool owner and cya is high, not sure of Leslie’s advice

Hello,
New pool owner as of this summer. Trying to learn as much as I can. I went into Leslie’s recently and the test showed my cya was 106. It is almost 110 degrees daily here. He recommended draining pool to the second step and refilling. We had some shrinkage cracks on the plaster near the tanning ledge and I’m not fond of the idea of letting the plaster dry out on the ledge with this intense heat. Thoughts?

Welcome to TFP!!!

First, get a good test kit that is accurate and reliable. Link-->Test Kits Compared

Second, when you get your test kit, post a full set of results.

For your CYA test, follow bullet point 8 to do a diluted CYA test to get an accurate CYA level to determine how much water to replace.

If you need to replace water, use section 3.5, "No Drain Water Exchange" to replace water without draining.

Welcome to TFP 🤗
The first step is to get your own accurate test kit to base your next steps off of as pool store testing varies in accuracy by the day.

After you’ve got that & have reliable data if your cya is indeed that high you can do a no drain water exchange with the correct amount of water to prevent harming your plaster.
Section 3.5 👇
If your cya is 100 you would need to exchange 50% of your pool’s water to get it down to a reasonable cya level of 50ppm. Going down to the top step is really not going to do the trick & multiple drains & refills use substantially more water because it gets mixed each time.
Until your kit comes be sure you’re using enough liquid chlorine to maintain fc around 10ppm so nothing funky starts brewing & discontinue use of stabilized chlorine products
.... "Min FC" is 7.5% of the CYA level
.... "Target FC" is 11.5% of the CYA level
.... "Shock FC" is 40% of the CYA level

Ok wow thank you. Just ordered a tf pro kit. So do not use the 1lb of shock weekly or the two tablets? I thought it was either that or liquid.

Starting to think pool builder wasn’t the best source of info. I’m about to start a deep dive into this website to get better knowledge.

Again thank you!

Granular shock adds Calcium to the pool. Tablets add CYA...hence your problem.

Add 5ppm of liquid chlorine per day until your kit arrives. Use PoolMath (<--This is a link) to figure out how much will add 5ppm to your pool.

What is the drop kit the builder left? Make/Model...

The pH test in that kit is fine. If you test in the 7s, leave the pH alone.
The chlorine test in that kit is only going to tell you you have chlorine, not how much.

Just add the 5ppm per day to your pool until the test kit arrives.

By your own test kit and don’t listen to them

My rough math seems to come out to 7.5 gallons per day. Does that seem right to you? It’s roughly a 15000 pool
3 quarts (96oz) of 10% liquid chlorine will add 5 ppm FC to 15000 gallons of pool water.

Click on the Menu button, top right
Select 'Effects of Adding'
Then you can enter the size of the pool, what you are adding and it'll tell you what it'll do.
