KK's getting her holiday weekend eye-candy practice in as we speak. But honey, I've only tested the CYA five times this evening.

Marla, there is a small black dot in the bottom of the tube. You slowly pour the solution in to determine how much cya is in your pool. When the black dot completely disappears you read the level on the side of the tube and that is your cya reading.

BUT it's difficult to see. Not an easy test!
 
We had a fabulous Labor Day! Had all of our friends over for a Blue Bell Party and swimming! So much fun!

But we did have a scare. Last night after we went to bed, about 2AM Sasha, our very old German Shorthaired Pointer comes into the bedroom, wakes us up - she is soaking wet and shaking. She apparently fell into the pool - we have no idea how long she was in there - but it was probably quite some time. Thank God she remembered all the work we did with her to orient her to the doggie beach entry or she likely would have drowned.

This morning she can barely walk. She is already on pain killers and Adequan injections - but we doubled up today. :(

We have been working with our dogs from day 1. I still do NOT have confidence that they can do it themselves - when they are scared. But we just continue to use opportunities to train them to get in and out at the beach entry and keep our fingers crossed. My pups are our babies - we don't have kids - so this is a huge thing for us. Sasha wasn't expected to make it the past couple of years - but Adequan aka "Liquid Gold" is an amazing medicine and has allowed us to be able to enjoy her a while longer! Now to just keep her from stumbling into the pool again!

I'm testing and keeping my water balanced. The only thing - what a PAIN to keep buying bleach. Everytime I go through the checkout - I feel like I murdered someone and am trying to clean up the crime. HEAVY, it is so heavy! I am disliking Bleach. A lot. I WAY underestimated this.

I asked my PB about a Sterner - he said he installs them when he does commercial builds (not sure why commercial) - he said they are great as long as I clean the rods (or something like that). I guess it would be easier than buying weekly. I don't know what I am going to do. I will probably continue to buy and manually dose weekly till Spring.

I might even convert to SW. My PB said the MossRock is fine the coping is the only concern and they used OK Flagstone - it has the hardest density or something like that. I just really didn't want SW.

Ugh. Can you tell I really don't like buying bleach every week. What a pain!!!!!
 
Wendy is a pool store that sells liquid chlorine in your area?

I get it from the Ace Hardware store up the road. It is listed at 11% but has tested out as high as 14% when it is a brand new batch. I get it in 2.5 gals jugs I "rent" from them. I get 4 jugs so 10 gals. That lasts me for 12 days during the summer. I add about 1/3 a jug a day.

I understand how you feel about the bleach. For the first 30 days before we could start up the salt cell, I couldn't believe how much bleach I was going through. And that was with the pucks, too. It did get better towards the end as the CYA went up. But I thought to myself that I'd definitely get a stenner pump if I ever decided to go back to bleach or the manual chlorine method.

If you don't want to go with a SWG system, I would add the stenner pump first. It seems to me that would be your best solution. I bet your PB might even do the install if he knew you were going to find someone else.

For me, I had swum in a pool with a SWG system all last summer and loved it. I'm still too new to be a good example for you, but so far (2 weeks...) this has been so much easier. I m surprised how everything has seemed to balanced out - I'm not struggling with the pH and haven't added bleach in 2 weeks. In fact, I'm having to lower the pump run time to keep the FC lower in the correct range. So less pump run time, the better my electric bill.

Good luck - just wanted to let you know, adding bleach and buying so much each day was getting old for me, too.

Appelbe had a place in Spring closer to 45 that sold a stronger weight bleach. He gave the Amazon link for the larger containers he ordered. I guess you have to take your own, but that cuts down on the empty bleach bottles all over the place. The two Ace Hardware stores near me don't sell the stronger bleach.

Thanks guys. I will def look into the larger/stronger containers of Bleach and see if that is an option for me out here in the stix. For me, part of it - is I don't want to keep the bleach in the back yard near the pool, and I don't really have any place in the back yard to keep it, unless I want to just sit it somewhere. I am buying 5 jugs at a time (Kroger #5 deals).

The hubby was very clear about pool care when he conceded and gave into the pool. It was all on me. So I refuse to show weakness! I carry my bleach in like I like it! Then come here to complain :)
