New Member, First Build...What have we gotten into?

Everybody better sit down for this one - nobody showed on Wednesday for plaster. Not only did they not show, they didn't call to say they weren't coming. so when Bob called the project manager to ask where he was he says "Oh, the pool builder's daughter had her baby so the PB is with his daughter and I (the project manager) am covering his appointments. And since you wanted me to be on site for plaster, I rescheduled it for Friday". And of course it also meant that apparently none of the other work could get done this week either.

just had to pass along the ridiculousness of the situation. - Karen

What the what?!? He had to cover the other guy's appointments after all that you guys have endured?!

So frustrating! What a hassle! Honestly no respect for your time!

It was a double whammy day for Bob too - since I thought he would be tied to the house on Wed, his early birthday present of a new band saw was getting delivered on Wed via freight. Turns out their truck broke down so the band saw wasn't delivered as planned (and they didn't call either)

I have seen pictures from Bob - the plaster men are there. (I know, this group won't consider it confirmed until YOU see the photos, but I won't get to post them until I get home from CA tonight). However, I can say:

1) the dye lots and product lots have been checked on all bags
2) the crew seems like they have worked together awhile as all seem to know their exact jobs and appear efficient at what they are doing without much standing around
3) they are not mixing the plaster by hand - so I think that should provide more consistency
4) amazingly enough - the color is coming out with the plaster application (surprise PM - no dyeing needed)
5) they had to chip a small weep hole at the bottom of the spa but will fill at the end
6) they are throwing abalone shells in by hand at 1 part per 6 ratio (so CC, according to them, it should be pretty blingy)
7) Bob says, "this stuff is cool as s@$#" and sends me a picture of the plaster from the spa
8) it has started raining but doesn't seem to bother the crew
9) they estimate total time should be 3-4 hours - they seem really far along based on last picture

Separately, there are other subs measuring the concrete countertop template. This is so annoying as we approved the countertop weeks ago - and they are just now doing it. At least the pool portion of this should be getting close to completion but there will be open items - because the stone masons/tile workers won't come back out until the countertop is done and there is still a 3ft section of 1x1 tile missing from around the pool.

I don't want to say it - but I'm kind of getting excited!

What do you think of our California "storm"?
I hope you are really are getting plastered.

My office is in Irvine and the hotel was in Newport Beach. I think relatively speaking they got the light end of it. My flight out of John Wayne was only 1 hour delayed (versus cancelled). The areas that got mud slides look pretty seriously damaged. The rain impacts The Dallas area similarly when it comes down so heavily in a short time and then stalls. We may not get mudslides but we definitely get flooding. Unfortunately, my friend from San Diego was unable to drive up because of the weather.

conversely, the Dallas suburb of Irving had another earthquake this week ~ 2.8. Interestingly enough it's the 10th one in 30 days with 20 occurring for the year.

Now that's a Cali thing. Quakes.
My wife was supposed to fly up to Frisco ( San Francisco not Frisco Texas) for her holiday party. Flight got cancelled.
My pool was filthy when I got home from work and full up to the coping. Ugh. Spent some time cleaning and filtering and dousing bit with chemicals. Thank god for robots.
Can't wAit to see your plaster. Yep it's even exciting for me.

The Proof is in the Plaster...And I will be posting lots of pictures because I've waited a LONG time for this day. And I'm so thankful to Bob for taking all of these pictures - it's my way of pretending I was here watching it. And since he knows I will ask, "and then what did they do???" he left me a notebook full of all the steps they took in order. I love it!

The Plaster Crew arrives (in the fog) and begins to prepare

The plastic is down and he's starting on the steps. Isn't it crazy how many hoses there are? Note the tiny area that needs to get plastered between the flagstone of the tanning shelf and the tile/coping.

Interesting technique. This is a Y they troweled into the plaster so water could drain away. At the end, they filled it in (you can see the remnants of it in the above picture). They swear as it dries, you will not be able to see any marks - something we will be watching as it dries

We've been told, that the PM will be back out tomorrow to acid wash and start filling.

I can't believe I have plaster - seriously. I can't wait to go outside tomorrow morning and look at it in person and just stare at it.

Bob! You did a great job with the pictures! That is SO sweet of you to write down what they did in steps.

Did the early B-day present show up as well?

I can't wait to see the plaster with water in it and the sun shining!

I bet the acid wash helps with the y they put in for the water.

YES! You are getting done!

Kim - both his presents arrived (band saw and drill press) - and of course, I had to go out and see them - right after looking at the pool :)

I am waiting anxiously to see how it turns out with water in it.

Fantastic! So happy for you. Can't wait for more pics. What color plaster is it? What is the product?

The plaster is stonescapes black mini pebble with abalone shells hand thrown in. In our build, this ended up being 2 upgrades from normal plaster plus the extra cost of the abalone shells.

This is what it looked like the morning after

First they removed the plaster slush - so interesting to watch that and a bit challenging for them with the heavy truck in the mud. Then they started acid washing. I felt bad for them as the wind was howling and the acid wash (as I am sure the fumes) were blowing horizontally. I had some concern how that would impact the process. None of the guys wore masks or gloves.

Another interesting technique - using the bottle to float the hose so it doesn't lay on the bottom. The hose has brass fittings but in lieu of wrapping it in a sock, they used the bottles

After reading TwoLabs thread, I didn't want the spa filled first, but when I got home - it was already done. It doesn't look like they let any spillover:

There is a lot of plaster debris (and leaves) already in the pool - the wind is not helping at all.
