New Build Wylie, TX

I see no issues with you using the pucks to up the CYA as long as you are running your pump 24x7 as your are now. Seems very prudent if you already have them. Keep track of how many you have used to calculate your CYA. This will be more accurate than a measurement this early on in the pool startup. Just keep your FC at the level appropriate for the calculated CYA. See output from PoolMath below on tri-chlor tabs. One tab a day is probably about perfect dosage.

If I remember correctly, the App defaults to Salt level of 1000. I thought maybe this had been corrected but maybe not.

Now that you have a real test kit, you will probably find the pH will only rise and not hover between 7.2-7.5. If it is falling I believe that indicates the TA needs to be upped, but again I am still a newbie and would look for the Gem Geeks to chime in.

Bury your head about the UV gadget and chalk it up to lesson learned. I think others on here believe it actually ups your chlorine usage as the UV consumes it....... Kind of makes sense but I have 0 experience with it. Maybe your PB will give you a decent trade in value for a SWG?

If it helps, you will save that $1500 back quickly maintaining your pool the TFP way and staying away from the pool store hocus-pocus. Trust me, I have plenty of experience with that...........

I know on the UV I need to take the advice from Frozen and let it go.

This is default it may be 1000 but doesn't show.

And when I zero out salt.

Just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed following your build, it turned out fantastic. Well done. Ours starts soon and I hope it it goes and turns out as well as yours.

...and my 5 year old daughter is also going through a mermaid phase. She not only HAS to be wearing her mermaid suit in the pool, but also has extras for friends to wear....even an adult size for the babysitter!

Pool looks awesome! Congrats! Yea CYA test is the most difficult and subjective. That is why I have basically used the number I calculated for starting out. I suspect it has dropped a little with the 4.5" of rain last weekend and early week.

Have I talked to you about GLANCING only?

Do NOT look for the dot or you will see it lol

Pour to first line (100) GLANCE in. If you see the dot pour to the next line, GLANCE in....keep doing this, line by line, until you do not see at a GLANCE.

You can pour the mixture back and forth as many times as you want to.

I started using this method last week! It really helps find the CYA level.

The water looks great!

Finally able to take some pics in full sun. I love how the water color turned out. Stressed for nothing!

Haha I am glad you said this because it made me look at them on a computer and you are correct they look better!

Figuring out this pool chemistry thing is both fun and frustrating but oddly enough more fun than frustrating. I added about 5 lbs of baking soda because we have been steadily on the low end of PH. This raised it a little too much so adding MA to balance. It did however get my TA to 100. Going to use pucks for one more week then switch to liquid. Btw has anyone put a tennis ball in their pool to absorb oils (from sun tan lotion and such)? My wife saw this somewhere wondering if it works.

I am glad you are finding it more fun! After a while the frustrating part will come to an end (I still do not like the CYA test but have come to live with it using the GLANCE method )

I have heard of people using a "scum bag" ohhhhhhhhh look what I found when I went to look for the bag! CUTE!

A tennis ball cannot hurt anything so give it a go and let us know what you find out!
