New build, north DFW again!

More good progress today. All the coping around the perimiter of the pool is set, stone scuppers and spillway are finished.

The cedar arbor looks basically done.

Now, I have a few questions to the forum members.
1. There was a good amount of lumber left over, that the workers quickly scooped up and took with them. Is this lumber that I paid for and should I ask for it back or be compensated for them removing it?
2. There appear to be 5 or 6 pieces of coping that look like they have man made damage from when the stone was still large and being scraped up against each other. I will take some good pictures in the morning when the lighting is good, but I'm thinking about having them replace those pieces now, before the mortar/grout is set in between them. Is that out of the norm?

The only way you would know if that wood was yours, was if you counted every single stick....You can bet you did pay for it, but you have no proof they ordered more just in case and took back what was left. I think you might be splitting peas with the fine scratches, but if it was me, yep, sorry lads, those wont do, give me new ones.

Hi,
It shouldn't be an issue to your PB once you show him photos. The damage is significant enough. While its frustrating that the damage happened in the first place - usually the PB's are good about fixing things even the ones that seem like it will take some work effort. But generally - you have to be the squeaky wheel to get things done and vigilant about pointing out the issues. if you don't have a site supervisor each time the subs are on site, its very unlikely the subs are going to mention to the PB that they screwed something up. -Karen

Also - about the extra lumber. I think it wouldn't hurt to mention it to the PB. We found out that one of the carpenters (out of 3 that had been assigned to our project) was allegedly stealing from the PB from the job sites (ordering extra material and then taking the excess home) and it's likely that the pool owner is getting charged for the extra material.

I stare longingly at the extra flagstone laying around my build - thinking how they would make a great path out to the barn, but I figure the stone workers are going to load those back up and bring them back to the PB's stone yard since my contract materials list didn't list the specific amount of material in a way that I could measure it in and out. -Karen

First of all, your stone work looks awesome, and loving the arbor. We hope to done similar in the next couple of years, when the budget recovers a little!

As far as the coping, I agree with the others. I would think that would be a fairly easy fix without much cost or problem for the PB. It seems like in these types of construction projects, we have to weigh "How much will this bother me over time?" vs "How negatively will this go over with the PB and how costly will it be fix?"

This one looks like a quick and easy fix.

No idea on the extra lumber, but I agree with Karen. I bet it will be like our extra flagstone. They bring enough to get the job done and take back the rest. This is probably some other areas where they are able to pad their bids a little and earn a little extra on the side, who knows.

The PB's crew was out today, sanding down each and every piece of coping. They did a decent job on the pieces that had large grooves in. They are not visible, but you can feel where they were. I'm indifferent to it now, and I know it won't bother me. I will let my wife make the final call on wether or not it is acceptable.

Ok, so we walked the permitter of the pool today on a very sunny day. What a difference it made. The defects on 4 of the coping pieces are very noticeable. A little hand sander, on its edge just doesn't cut it. We have informed the PB, so now we wait to see what he does.

I was able to take the rest of the open tile back from the PB before they left. The tile guys originally left me 5 pieces (1 has already been used). I asked how much more they had left. When they showed me, I asked for all of it, which they gave back to me.
