Has there been any discussion about one versus two skimmers?

I always recommend a pool have two skimmers. It may work fine on one until the skimmer has a problem. If you have two skimmers in the pool then the pool can run as long as necessary on the other skimmer.

No, there hasn't been discussion in this thread regarding 2 skimmers. I have read quite a few other threads regarding 2 though.

I'm curious - does the skimmer itself fail? Or the plumbing to the skimmer? I guess I haven't really come across many threads of an actual failed skimmer so I'd like to learn more about it.

We see many threads of rocks, toys, and chemicals clogging skimmers. Pipes crack. Leaves clog skimmers.

Go find @Casey thread when a toy was sucked down her skimmer. It required new piping to repair.

If your skimmers are home run to the equipment pad you can take a problem skimmer offline and fix it at your leisure. With one skimmer your pool is shutdown.

My main suction line collapsed due to a toy disc being sucked to the bottom of the skimmer basket. I could fill the line with water all day but once the pump was powered up, it drew the line dry as the line compressed. Brand new line on a brand new pool because flex pipe was used. Not fun at all.

After working a couple hours a day for a few days, I've finally about wrapped up the plumbing. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. It was my first time bending PVC with a torch, and first time plumbing a pool in general, but it went pretty smooth. I tried to bend as much as possible to eliminate joints.

Equipment pad. The stub outs that are capped are for future solar. The long stretch after those are for SWG.



Lines are -

Suction .... 2.5" MD and 2.0" skimmer
Pressure.... 2.0" sheer (with check valve), 1.5" returns, 1.5" deck jets (4)

I have unions on the pump, filter, and SWG so I should be able to switch out components when necessary.











Tomorrow will be running 1" conduit for the 3 lights and bonding wire, and running the last 2 returns. Getting ready for inspection next Wednesday, the shotcrete!

Passed city inspection yesterday, so shotcrete today! All went incredibly smooth! It was amazing watching the skill of the workers... I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome -

Question for anyone looking - does waterline tile always need waterproofing behind it? Or does it depend on the type of thinset used? On my neighbor's pool, I did not see any waterproofing used. They applied the thinset to the shotcrete, then tile.

That is what is done on most pools. That does mean it is correct or what is recommended by tile manufactures.

Waterproofing behind the tile protects from Efflorescence - Further Reading coming out of the grout and around the tiles.

Another question... Should I roll some water proof membrane on the back of my raised bond beam before I backfill? There really shouldn't be much moisture back there, but I suppose now is the time to do it if I need to!

You want moisture that gets into the gunite to not escape on the pool side. But you want to give the gunite surface area for water to escape from it. Waterproof the inside pool area, not the outside shell.

I asked my inspector about it on an earlier unrelated inspection I had done.

He said it's only needed if I have nicheless LEDs. He said since I have three bonded light fixtures, the fixtures themselves bond the water and that fitting is not needed.

Does that sound correct? Either way, I passed inspection without it...

Thank you for the info. I see the 5th and 6th layer on that diagram show glass tile install. I can see using two layers of waterproofing for small format glass tiles. I will be using 6x24 tiles for the waterline, so pretty minimal grout lines.

Would you still follow the above diagram to a T with such large tiles?

With ceramic tiles I think you can get away with one waterproofing layer and one layer of thinset.
