Neptune 2.7 THP Motor NPTQ270 vs Century VG270 2.7 THP ECM27SQU Variable Speed Motors

Anyone here have any experience with Neptune 2.7 THP Motor NPTQ270? The Neptune seems to be far less expensive. The Century motor is discontinued but some as still available in the 'wild west web.'
Have installed three of the Neptune motors in the last two years (one came on a new pump). They are somewhat new, but there have been no issues so far. Nidec is a good manufacturer.

Where are you sourcing the motor and at what price?

$599.99 but out of stock. I swear it was $549.99 earlier this morning. Another concern I have is suppliers are saying if control module goes bad, you have to replace the entire pump.

Hi 1poolman1,

Thanks for the reply. I need to replace an AO Smith single-speed motor (Model SQ1202).
  • Do you know if this Neptune 2.7 THP Motor model NPTQ270 will work with Pentair Challenger Pump (Model CHII-N1-2A) without changing impeller or diffuser?
  • Inyo says the CENTURY VGREEN 270 Variable Speed Motor Square Flange 2.7THP ECM27SQU is a direct replacement without changing impeller or diffuser

Yikes, out of a garage? No wonder he doesn't answer the phone - he's laying dead sod. Man, thanks.

If the control module/drive quits on virtually any other VS motor the cost of the item is usually about equal to the cost of this motor with drive.

Will install the same as the V-Green, no need to change either.

Thanks for the help and advice JamesW. I think I'll stick with local AZ supplier with a verifiable physical address. At least I can drive there to 'negotiate'

Well, ended up buying two Nidec/US Motors Neptune 2.70 THP Variable Speed Motors (NPTQ270) from Waterline Technologies in LA.

I returned the CENTURY VGREEN 270 Variable Speed Motor ECM27SQU to American Best Pool Supply. They graciously waived the 15% restocking fee which they apply if the original shipping container is damaged - they don't advertise waiver but said they would when I called.

Both companies seemed very good. No local companies had either motor in stock.

Post a follow-up review when you get a chance on how you like the motors.
@JamesW - I like them so far. Very easy to operate. Programming is a breeze. A heck of lot easy to wire up than my ancient AO Smith workhorses. Still watching/adjusting the programming: At the moment, I 1) start them at 2700 rpm for 3 hours for my Poolvergnuegen. 2) then 4 hours at 2150rpm for my Circupool generator. 3) final 3 hours at 1400rpm. Already seeing 27% drop on my home KwH. Now I'm considering replacing my ancient Pentair Challenger spa jet and Waterfall motors. I suspect Nidec/US Motors Neptune 2.70 THP Variable Speed Motors (NPTQ270) might be overkill so looking at something simpler but more efficient - any suggestions?
