My pool looks like a swamp! New owner, 1st time opening, Help!

Ok. Hope you get your reagent tomorrow. I should be around more tomorrow. Just a busy weekend.

Ok, Great! I really appreciate your time and attention to my issue!:D

I checked the tracking, says it's being delivered tomorrow, most likely in the afternoon though. Think I should just wait until it gets here to test and go from there? Or add any chlorine in the morning?

What's the plan of attack Lisa!? He he.. I'm relying on you! :D

How often should I be testing?

It's been 5 days since I first tested CYA and added stabilizer, should I retest? We had changed my target from 16 to 18, should I continue at 18?

I just dumped in 266oz, I'll go brush right now.

i would not go longer than 3 hours max between tests. Once FC is holding better then you can go longer between tests. If you did not order 2 bottles of 0871 go ahead and order another in case you need it. Don't want to run out again. I tested every 2 hours almost my whole SLAM and went through 3 bottles of 0871

Yes still target 18 and then test CYA in a couple of days.

Ok.. I'll shoot for every 2 hours. I did find a pool store that's about 20 mins. away that sells 0871, but it's double the price of online. I'll go ahead and order another one. I ordered the 0870 powder and larger bottle of CYA 0003

Headed out to scrub!

This may be a dumb question, but I have thought of it frequently during these SLAM threads. Wouldnt it be more cost effective to just drain the pool and re fill rather than going through 50+ jugs of bleach? For the record, I am also not suggesting this be done, I am just curious and would like to hear what the more knowledgeable people on this forum think.

Draining vs. SLAM is truly dependent on your water supply. If you have GOOD cheap water, and your pool is real bad, it might be cheaper to start over. But think of it this way. If you take the water out, you still have the algae and stuff in there that you now have to manually remove. With the water in there you can let the chemicals do the hard work for you.
I'm sure there are other considerations, but that is how I sold it to myself.

What ^^^^^^^^^^^^ this says.

I am on a well so I would not want to refill as it is hard on my pump and it takes quite a bit of time.

A lot of folks have tough water restrictions, so refilling a pool can garner them a hefty fine. Others are on well water and need to work with the water they have rather than risk their well collapsing. Just two reasons that come to mind... perhaps there are others?

Here's a few more reasons a drain is not always better...
In a place with a high water table you can be risking floating your pool/popping it out of the ground.

In a hot desert climate leaving a plaster /stone type pool empty and dry in the sun heat can risk damage..

Vinyl liners can shift and get wrinkled or ruined without water to hold them in place. They can also get dried out /brittle and not stretch back properly.

Just a few more risks that have to be considered before someone thinks about draining vs. Fixing the current water.

I know no one can say for sure, but if I can get my water up to shock level today, and keep on it every 2 hours, approximately how long might it take to clear up? I'm down to 5 Gals. of chlorine. I know Im going to have to get more. Cost is starting to add up on all this chlorine.
