multi-port valve setting when cleaning DE filter

What position should the multi port valve be when I'm going to clean the filter? We took apart the filter this weekend and DE and debris went back into the pool when we started it back up (after it was all cleaned off and put back together) so it must have been in the lines.

I think I just leave it is filter mode when I take it apart. There really should not be any way for debris to get into the pipes. Perhaps in backwash mode would be better while you are draining the filter so that any water flow backward through the pipe would go to the waste port.

My equipment pad is up hill from the pool if that makes a difference. I'll try backwash.
