Morton Pool Salt from Home Depot really messed up my pool

On April 30, 2021, K+S Aktiengesellschaft sold its North and South American business units, including Morton Salt, to Stone Canyon Industry Holdings, Mark Demetree and affiliates for $3.2 billion. The deal closed in April 2021.

The first thing a new corporate buyer does is slash costs by slashing quality.

Typical corporate nonsense written by executives that only care about profit.

Our companies align with industry verticals where our leadership team and experts have accumulated extensive knowledge, relevant experience and a deep network of relationships to drive growth and value across the board.

WHAT DO OUR VERTICALS HAVE IN COMMON?
They have the potential and power to build substantial companies that make a difference. They have stable growth with very low volatility. They're poised to emerge as industry leaders through smart consolidation.

By developing synergy with strategic partners, we endeavor to align our financial profit motives with or executive’s need for luxury items while making sure that workers are producing at maximum output for minimum pay and minimum benefit.

Customers need to continue to believe in the quality of the product through clever advertising and marketing while we save millions by cutting safety and quality wherever possible.

I usually buy Mortons salt over Chlorox due to quality concerns from Chlorox. Yesterday I picked up Sure Soft instead of Mortons because of this thread.

Hopefully you can get them to provide a resolution and thank you for posting. I know many on here are watching this thread. Good luck.

I am so sorry that happened to your pool! But thank you for posting this. The pool store that shall not be named was out of salt yesterday, so today I am heading to the depot to buy some. You have saved at least 2 people from headache... heartbreak.

Just in case this helps, the manufacturing batch code for this stuff is:

Mexico LB23065002

I had purchased 4 bags (different mfg code) about 2 months ago, then 12 bags (code listed above) later. Waited until yesterday to add them. The first 4 bags were OK, but the last 12 were the ones with that above code and were full of brown, oily sand/salt. That is what really fooled me. First 4 bags all looked fine. So I did not think to really inspect that later ones as I added them, until too late.

I agree that those pictures don't look like the right consistency or color for anything. We have had reports here of similar; I would definitely contact Morton. Does it taste salty?

I use the Diamond Crystals "Solar Naturals Water Softener Salt Crystals" (same brand as what Newdude posted but different product), which is available at both Home Depot and my local Ace around here (actually cheaper at Ace, and they load it in the trunk). I don't have a picture unfortunately, but it comes out as small discrete chunks that have always appeared fully white and pure to me. Brushing for 5 minutes dissolves it quite nicely, and because the chunks are a bit bigger at first you can see when they're still there.

For those who've gotten good actual "pool salt", what consistency is it supposed to be? Is it fine like table salt? I wonder if that further grinding process has more opportunity to introduce contaminants or get crossed on a line with other products.

I've now used 2 brands of pool salt and the bags ranged from sand to pea sized chunks. The Diamond crystals water softener salt I got a couple of times was pea sized to sugar cube sized.

All of that I’ve used is very white colored small pea sized chunks. The water softener salt I’ve used was larger peanut sized pellets.

I must've got the same batch. If it's any consolation I also saw the brown salt and thought huh oh well, threw a chunk in and saw the brown cloud and still thought huh oh well. It being Morton brand and labeled for pools I guess I was confident it couldn't be bad.

Mine was only one bag though and my vinyl liner doesn't mind so sympathies to your plaster.

I think it probably comes from here:

Maybe it's a fine insoluble dust that really settles into the plaster and a manual vacuum would help.

I used 8 bags for new swg and it was fine...poured out almost like sugar with a few clumps. Almost immediately dissolved in front of the turn. But nowhere on it does it say "Product of Mexico".
