Loop with a valve

hi there, I’m very new to pool equipment. Can anyone explain to me what this loop is for? I comes after my check valve and before my spa and pool returns?

We need to see bigger pics so we can zoom in..

I suspect that it is a "make up system".. it bypasses the Return valve so that some water goes to your spa spillover when you are in the pool mode.

But... I can't tell for sure based on the pics you provided..

Looks like it is probably a heater bypass.

I agree with JamesW... It looks to be a heater bypass.

More of a partial bypass and not a complete bypass.

With the handle pointed to the left or right, the bypass would be off and all the water would go through the heater.

With the handle pointed at the ground, most of the water would bypass the heater but some water would still go through the heater.
