Jandy VSP Keeps Priming

Good morning, new pool owner here, first season. Built a liner pool back in the fall, with Jandy equipment.

This past week, I noticed the pool goes into priming mode every few minutes. I called the pool builder, but someone can't come out until next week. My fear is this can't be good for the pool equipment, so I would love to trouble shoot if I can.

The pump is a Jandy VSP. I haven't knowingly changed any settings, but I can't understand why this is happening. I did clean all skimmers, and removed the cartridges from the filter to clean those as well to ensure no known blockages.

Look forward to hearing back and thank you.

How do you control the pump? Aqualink? Do you have a schedule set? Is it actually going into priming mode or is the pump basket just filling with air?

Controlled through Aqualink.

Forgive me as I am a newbie. I believe it goes into priming mode. There is always water in the pump basket, but once it gets to the optimal state of filled with no bubbles, it seems to reset and the water levels drops, and it starts to look like a “ washing machine” with the water pumping. And this repeats continually. Does that make sense?

This is an air leak not a priming issue. Turn it off and remove the lid. Use some silicone lube on the oring of the lid. My guess is that it's the lid leaking. Hopefully anyway!

Thank you! Until the issue is fixed should I limit the use of the filter? My fear is it’s damaging the pump in its current state.

Also, what else should I look for if it is in fact an air leak outside of just the lid?

You are awesome to be so helpful

Also check any drain plugs in the pump and filter to make sure they are seated correctly

For water to be draining fast out of the pump the vacuum has to be breached somewhere otherwise it would be a slow air leak imho

It's almost certainly a suction side leak. That's the lid or any of the plumbing before it.

It probably won't damage anything since you're never without water. You could stop it (the pump). I assume you are chlorinating with pucks or liquid chlorine? No reason to have the pump running all the time unless you have a saltwater chlorine generator.

It’s a saltwater generator.

The higher RPM of the priming is overcoming the air leak and then when the pump returns to normal speed it is losing enough water to send it into prime. As a temporary fix you can turn your “normal” RPms up high enough (or run at high speed) to overcome the air leak

You can use shaving cream or smoke or colored water on all the pvc connections and valves to see if anything is pulled into the connection while the pump is running ….

Then just keep an eye on your chlorine level until the builder can check it out and be prepared to manually chlorinate using liquid chlorine (bleach). But I think you're ok to run it. Post a video of the basket if you can.

I don't think the pump goes into prime mode unless the pump is power cycled.
