Jandy JXI400N - Trouble Air

Hey all - Can I replace the heat exchanger with the cupro-nickel version? It is about the same price. Also can anyone tell looking at my plumbing if it is 2"? I want to get 4 unions and build a bypass for the heater so I can remove it totally to work on it.

1.5" PVC has a OD of 1.9"

2" PVC has a OD of 2.375"

My eyes are not good enough to see a .475" difference in your pics but you can easily measure the pipes.

I would not put that much money into the heater.

Maybe get VersaPlumb with a new heater.

A new heater is $3600+ not to mention Jandy won't sell to me. I can get a very similar Pentair for the same price . The Versaflow attachment is even more like $500 more. The heat exchanger only is $900. Once I tear it down and see what condition it's in I'll reevaluate. Everything looks very clean so far and I know my water was spot on so I am expecting a weld failed and not destroyed by bad water. I need to do some plumbing first though.

If you had the Versaflo installed originally, it would be under warranty.

JXi™ heaters are warranted for one (1) year.

Heat Exchangers on JXi Gas Heaters with factory-installed VersaFlo™ Integrated Bypass are warranted for five (5) years.

Well this does me no good now lol. What I wonder is if this actually helps increase exchanger life. There is one on ebay (new) for $150. If it actually does some good I will install it when I replace the exchanger.

My stuff was installed in 2017. I see no chance of them covering this under any warranty especially since I am not going to have a "pro" look at it.

The thermal regulator prevents flow through the heat exchanger until the heater starts, so I don't see how the VersaFlo would prolong the life of the heat exchanger.

It will reduce head loss by bypassing the flow instead of forcing the flow through the heater's internal by[pass.

Who knows maybe jandy is aware of a flawed defect in the exchanger the year yours was built. You have the chemistry logs it’s worth a try. If that doesn’t work try and contact the local jandy sales rep and voice your problem. Sometimes they can make it right or have spare parts and will just give them to you so they don’t have to deal with you.

When I got mine I had the option of the versaflow to bypass most of the heat exchanger when the heat was off. I didn't really know it was an option until after installation though. I made an offer on one on ebay waiting to see if it is accepted. It is fairly easy to install. I'll know more when I open up the heater.

Once it has the VersaFlo, then it qualifies for the 5 year warranty, right? ;)

But, seriously, it can't hurt to ask for a warranty covered part.

Get in there and see exactly what the damage is and then you can figure out why it happened.

I do remember about a month ago I found the ground soaked in that area. I didn't think anything of it but I wonder if this is intermittently leaking and that day leaked a lot. I'll run my bypass pipe tomorrow. Gotta disconnect everything which sucks they used the same relay for the heater and the pump. I'll cut the power and pull the wires out of the heater and cap them until I put everything back.

It goes to the cleaner.

Did the heater ever run while the water was going to the cleaner and bypassing the heater?

Nope I never use it at all. I crack it once in awhile to keep the water in the line fresh but always return it to the heater right away.
