My spa tripped my circuit breaker last year. It was supposed to be fixed last year but life got in the way and I deferred it until the snow cleared. Because of where I live, it is very difficult to get a technician to come the 2 hours it would take for repairs. I've been fortunate that the place where I purchased the spa is willing to send their tech out. He was scheduled to come out this week and canceled due to illness. The spa shop called me and said that this tech is out for a good and they're looking to replace him. In the meantime, they offered a solution: a former technician that worked for them branched out on his own and was willing to come out from Reno and have a look. Unfortunately, I had just left my mountain home for a week and could not be onsite for the technician. Since it's such a long distance for him and he was going to be in the area, I jumped at the chance. And I told him to jump my fence. Anyway, he showed up and called me later with an update. He thinks the two motors have been wet for a long time and that along with the heater board are causing the circuit to pop. It's a jacuzzi spa about five years old but all the model info is at my other house so I can't say exactly which model. Guy is quoting me about 2K for parts and labor. Seems very steep. My other worry is that, as part of his new business, he buys old spas and refurbishes them...I'm assuming that includes motors and heaters. I don't want to end up with a refurbished pump for that price. Thoughts...besides "you better be there when he does the work next time."

Well, that's not vague at all.
First, boards don't trip breakers unless they are wet. That makes me question this statement. Are you sure he said "board" and not just "heater"? Heater elements are the #1 cause of gfc trips.
If by "wet" he means that the pump seals are leaking then it might be time for new motors given the distances. He's trying to save future trips there and frankly so would I.

Depending on the pumps and what he's charging to drive a 4 hr round trip twice (I'm sure it's not cheap) I'd say that's not unreasonable.
