Hello!

We’re about to start a build for a 16x30 sport/play pool. 3’/6’/3’ style build.

I know we’re going to use the Intelliflo pump.

I think 1.5hp is plenty big enough, but, 3hp would run with less effort and be more efficient and quiet. Correct?

Welcome to the forum.

Absolutely. NO reason to get the de-rated Intelliflo. Get the full Intelliflo3 and you will be very happy.

Jack,

Unless you just don't have 240 volts at the equipment, I can't think of any reason to go with the the 1.5 HP model.

I have a 3 HP IntelliFlo that runs 24/7, mostly at 1200 RPM, for less the $20 bucks a month. My pump is 10 years old, and the newer ones are even more energy efficient.

Go big or go home...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Larger pumps move more water, allowing them to be run slower for the same flow, saving energy long term. The above is an extreme with dirt simple plumbing, but whatever speeds you end up needing will consume considerable less energy with the 3HP pump.

3’/6’/3’ style build.
Unrelated to your pump question, I'd recommend reexamining your depth choices. 3' is extremely shallow. I'd suggest 4' for your shallow end. 6' is an awkward depth for the "deep" portion since it's too deep for people to stand but too shallow for diving, etc. I'd suggest 5' for a sport/play pool.

* keep in mind too that water depth is about 6 inches less than the wall height. So a 4 ft wall has 3.5 ft water. 3.5ft is uncomfortable for me at 6ft3in. It's too shallow to bob around and it too deep to sit. Kneeling is so-so mid chest. For taditional swimming (laps), most hit their knuckles on the floor. IMO above grounds got it right with 48 inches of water because it feels more swim-y than standing crotch deep in water. Food for thought. :)

Anyone know the price difference between the two? Just want to have that info handy in case my pool builder suggests I “upgrade” to 3hp.

Jack,

It would be important to know which IntelliFlo pump your pool builder is planning on using..

The standard IntelliFlo VSF is a 3 HP pump and uses 240 volts.. The IntelliFlo i1 or i2 allows you to use 120 volts so has less HP and cost MORE.. so only an idiot would buy one of them. Make sure your pool builder does not try to sell you one.

I'm told that the new IntelliFlo3, which is normally a 3 HP pump, comes as a 1.5 HP pump but my go-to equipment supplier does not show it at all.

Here is a link to my go-to equipment place..

Keep in mind that the SuperFlo VS is a 1.5 HP pump but it is not an IntelliFlo.

You get what you pay for..

Thanks,

Jim R.

For the $400 difference I would get the Intelliflo3 3HP pump.

And I recommend you get the 011077 pump that includes the touchscreen control panel so you are not reliant on your phone app to control the pump in SERVICE MODE.

Intelliflo3 1.5 HP pump is P/N 011065 and available at Polytec Pools...
