Anyone know what to do with the wire that comes with the protek shield assembly for the new Raypak Heaters? The anode assembly came with a wire but no instructions on what it connects to and from…

Any pics or diagrams would be helpful

It’s supposed to be connected to the bonding wire at your equipment pad. You’ll need a brass bonding lug to connect the wire from the ProTek to the bare copper #8 wire at the pad. Most hardware stores have bonding lugs.

I don’t have a bonding wire on the pad. Do I need to run the ground wire from the electronics box to the heater?

Raypak just called me back…they’re saying to attach it to one of the bolts on the back that secure the 3/4” valve. Here’s a pic.

Any concerns with doing that?

How do you not have a bonding wire? A bond wire is an essential safety element of every pool. Unless the pool was built decades ago, no modern pool would pass inspection without a bonding wire to connect the pool to everything else.

Grounding and bonding are not the same thing and you shouldn’t connect ground wires to your pool equipment bonding lugs.

Can you look at your pool pump or heater, there should be a bonding lug on either of those. Are you saying there’s no wire attached to the equipment bonding lugs?

I found the bonding wire. It’s coming up out of the ground near the piping. The other end has a screw on it and is not connected to anything. What should be done here?

Also I have two concrete pads that are separate. Not sure that’s what you mean though…I put a pic in of the whole area

Whoever removed that bonding wire and didn’t reattach it did you a disservice.

So that bonding wire needs to be attached to your equipment like your pool pumps, your heater and, depending on your situation panel and SWG power supply, it should be attached to those as well. Pumps and heaters all have a lug on them for attaching the wire to. Basically everything metallic in contact with your pool needs to be attached to that bonding wire. It creates an equipotential grid that protects against stray voltages.

So look at all your equipment and find the bonding lugs to make sure everything is attached properly.

Thank you! I will have it fixed ASAP!

So for the anode ground wire…should it be connected to the valve on the heater as the Raypak support advised? Or directly to the bonding wire?

There should be a bond lug for the heater and you connect the bond wire to the heater bond lug and to the Protek Shield bonding wire ring assembly.

Follow the steps below to replace the ProTek Shield Assy:

1. Shut off the pool pump and bleed pressure from the system.

2. Close isolation valves to minimize pool/spa water loss.

3. Remove wing nut from bottom stud on ProTek Shield Assy.

4. Remove bonding wire ring terminal from stud.

5. Rotate ProTek Shield Assy. clockwise (by hand) to unscrew it from the assembly.

6. Inspect/replace as necessary and reverse above procedure to reinstall.

Hand tighten only! Do not use tools.

You can cut that old bond lug off the wire. Each piece of equipment in your system, except the heater, should already have a lug attached. The heater bond lug comes in the parts bag (along with an attaching screw) and has to be attached to the cabinet by the installer at the lower left or right side of the heater (right in your case). There will be a small hole in the cabinet to accept the screw. If you don't have the screw and bond lug, they can be purchased at most hardware stores for very little. I believe the screw size is #10 sheet metal. Get stainless steel if you can. Just force the screw in as it will make its own threads.

The bond lug on your pump is below the plastic cover on the back of the motor. Turn the power off, remove the cover (1/4" nut driver) for easier access. Small flat-blade screwdriver for the lug.
Get enough #8 bare copper to reach your heater and the ProTek. You can use a "split nut" to attach the new wire to the old. They look like the picture and can be obtained at most hardware stores. Be sure to tighten the nut very tight.

Thank you for this! Do I also need to attach a bonding wire to the SWG, and electrical panel (which also includes the iAquaLink)?

Instructions for the pump show where the bonding lug is located however it’s not there on my pump. Anyone have experience with this pentair pump and can tell me where it should be bonded?
