Some say that thin layer of DE may benefit the cartridge filtration, but is it going to prematurely shorten the life of the cartridges?
If I just installed a Pentair C & C Plus and then vacuumed DE off the floor will the cartridges need to be cleaned now?

DE cartridge elements are a a woven cloth designed to accept DE, and to allow DE to wash off of it.
Non-DE Cartridge elements are a non-woven material that the DE can wedge itself into and be VERY hard to clean off. We generally don't recommend it as it will permanently clog your cartridge filter and cause higher pressure drop long term (until you replace the cartridge).

Did you switch or is this theoretical ?
If theoretical, (debating the upcoming switch) keep the backwash leg with a 3 way diverter between the pump and filter for vac to waste. Then sweep the DE to a general area (gently, will take a few tries with breaks allowing it to settle). Then vac to waste.

The PSI has been 10 since it was installed and has not budged. Supposedly the PSI on filters with 4 cartridges does not increase as much, if at all, as in DE filters and cannot be used as a barometer of when a cleaning is necessary. Though, I also have a pre-filter installed.You did it. It is done.

Yup, that is an older Rev M manual from 2012.
It seems someone at Pentair changed their mind about recommending adding DE.

That was from the current C&C RP filter manual...
I would not use DE in a cartridge filter.
Maybe filter fiber if necessary, but mostly it is not needed.

I think the point we are making is that there may be some carts that can handle it and some that don't. The DE carts are woven and will handle it.
We've seen too many issues adding DE to a cart filter, and no way to know that your carts can handle it, unless they are DE carts.
We are recommending that you not add DE to a non DE cart.
