I opened my pool for the first time in 2years

You can put the sock in the skimmer basket, but not recommended to dump the CYA directly into the skimmer and into the filter. For one, the reason you mention, the inability to backwash without losing some.

Where do I get the list of TFP approved socks? Can I use a white gym sock like I see in the pic and can I just tie a knot in sock after putting it in. When I asked HOW I meant does anybody have a method for getting this amount of stuff in a skinny sock?

The how is I pull the sock opening over the mouth of the CYA container and tip it over slowly while holding the sock tightly around the mouth. Go SLOW so you can stop in time. I will tell you that I ALWAYS spill a little. No big deal.

Now you will get extra "points" if you use a really cute sock and share the pics with us LOL!

Thanks Kim!
Internet has been down all night and is just now back up. I am doing sock in the morning.

Channelvaps, I am hoping you didn't let the FC sit for too long at 4.5...gotta keep level at min. of 11..so you should ideally be testing it BEFORE it gets that low...test as frequently as needed to stay ahead. That's how you break its back. Every time it drops below the shock level that means the the algae gets to regroup and grow more. Don't give it time to do that!

I do not believe you purchased enough bleach to stay ahead...and it will not hurt to dose a little higher than 11...eg initially, use mustard shock level because if you don't stay ahead of it you will prolong getting it under control. Go out and get some more after your next dose so that you'll be ready. I went through 58 gal on mine and it was spring (cold) not midsummer (hot, which makes algae grow faster...) but maybe yours isn't as bad as mine was...either way, it doesn't hurt to have a good amount on hand.

Can you upload a pic to see color change?

Also, since you said you have COPD, you might want to consider wearing a mask when handling the MA. I use one of those respirator masks you can pick up at Lowes that you use for paint or chemical applications.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you to get ahead of the green monster :)

Hi SWoman
The bleach I bought yesterday was just on top of the bleach (10) I bought at WALMART the day before but you are right I do need more. I added 2 more gals when I got the reading of 4.5. Meant to go back and test again but feel asleep.
I am going to test this morning. All the vacuuming has drained me. The COPD interfers with because I get tired easy.
Thanks for your help

I have put sock with 32 oz stabilizer in skimmer. I added the last 2 gals of bleach. I have to go to Walmart and get more. I have not tested because I do not have any more bleach. I did brush again. Pool actually looks great. It is blue and it was clear until I brushed. it only got a smidgen cloudy then. Nothing on the bottom to vacuum up. Aside from not having bleach I must have done something right because it looks amazing.
Going to Walmart as soon as I catch my breath.
My TA is low (60) do I want to adjust that yet or wait?

Wow I am shocked to see that pic as I have been wasting time trying to figure out photo bucket instead of heading to Walmart. Am shocked I managed it.
Managing my pool and managing photo bucket in one week...WOW..my daughter and grandson will be shocked

So as you can see it is looking like a miracle after only 10 days. We did clean the deck so that makes a difference. Whew.

But don't stop your SLAM yet! Make sure you still keep testing and dosing to shock level (M For Maintain!) until you pass all 3 tests to stop the slam.

Your pool should be crystal clear

Your CC should be less than .5

You pass the OCLT (Overnight Chlorine Loss Test)

p.s.

WOW It's looking great!!

*edit*

I'd wait on the TA until you're definitely done with the SLAM. It's less to worry about all at once and it's not a pressing issue. ;-)

Thanks Beens-going to Walmart now to get Bleach so I can keep this up

You're welcome! You're really doing great. With it looking that good already you probably will find that your FC won't drop really quickly and you can stretch out your time between testing.

You'll find out soon enough!

If you've got a smartphone Target has an app called Cartwheel which lets you scan products in the store to check for extra discounts. Right now they have 5% off their Up&Up brand bleach.

It's usually the same price as Great Value so it's not a huge savings to get 5% off but if you're in Target or it's just as close as Wal-Mart it might be worth a few pennies savings.

Just something to keep in mind for future maintenance too. Sometimes they have a sale in the store and you can use the cartwheel coupon on top of that. That one actually makes a difference since wal-mart doesn't do sales. It's been a few months since they've put their bleach on sale though. I check every week!

Happy bleach shopping! lol

Just checked CHL levels again and it is staying at 11 FC. Second check today 3 hours apart and reading 11 both times. Sock is in pool. water is clear and blue. Thanks to a fellow TFp'er who graciously came by and took a look see and gave it his stamp of approval. YAY!
Thanks Tad.
Going to take a nap, sigh of relief and check it again around 4pm

Yep, everything is looking good, and you can rest assured you are doing it right. :thumleft:

You should pass OCLT tonight no problem. Also, with the low CYA level you are getting a break from mother nature today with the overcast sky. Just remember to squeeze the sock every so often and wait about a week before testing again. Any sooner probably won't register on the test anyway. If the next test still doesn't register for some reason let me know and we'll figure out why.

For those interested the CYA test stayed clear basically registering zero, but she is doing the sock in the skimmer thing. Also, Joe does cool tricks! LOL
