I opened my pool for the first time in 2years

Here's the guide for backwashing.

After you backwash, note the pressure at the pump. This is your Clean pressure. When this pressure rises 20%, it's time to backwash again.

Also... my pink sock made a cameo again! :D That one can get 3 lbs in it.

Cannot remember if I should not be back washing? Did someone say for a week?

Cut and paste from pool school: You increase CYA by adding cyanuric acid, often sold as stabilizer or conditioner. CYA is available as a solid and as a liquid. The liquid costs a lot more, and generally isn't worth the extra expense. Solid stabilizer can take up to a week to fully register on the test, so don't retest your CYA level for a week after adding some. Solid stabilizer is best added by placing it in a sock in the skimmer basket. The pump should be run for 24 hours after adding solid stabilizer and you should avoid backwashing/cleaning the filter for a week.

As always, you should get in there and knead that sock occasionally. Squeezing it will speed up the process and get it dissolved faster.

I would disagree somewhat with that quote. If you think you will need to backwash within the week, then hang the sock in front of the return jet instead of putting it in the skimmer.

Alright. Not as good of news as I was hoping for. I did lose some CHL. 4Pm reading

Wondering if I should throw some Baking Soda in and raise the TA? It is at 60

Disregard my question about BS and TA. Found post from Beens

I'd wait on the TA until you're definitely done with the SLAM. It's less to worry about all at once and it's not a pressing issue.

I will do exactly that

Swamp to Swim in ten days, starting from scratch. She had to learn how to do it too. Are there any nonbelievers left?

View attachment 31962

I am just amazed. Made a believer out of me. Never going back to the Pool Store. Now I can open my pool every year with no fear!

Thank you Frog, SWoman, Beens, Tado, JBlizzle, and any others I might have forgotten. Could not have done it without you.
I went to my pool store today to buy a new vacuum plate. I took my water with me to have them check it (really to gloat). I know they were thinking "Here comes Sue, you know she hasn't opened her pool in a few years, we can get serious money selling her some stuff"

I asked to have my water checked and one of the guys that I have dealt with many times said "how does it look because it tests perfect" I said it looked perfect too and that I had managed it all with borax, baking soda and bleach!

You have done a wonderful job.

Awesome news! Most importantly, you should now feel well equipped to manage your pool and ENJOY the thing :)

After your first summer of testing daiy and adding bleach/chlorine etc., you will find that you pretty much know how much you need to dose each day, and will be able to test every few days instead. And when you close clean and follow the tips on this board for closing and opening, you will totally enjoy opening clean next spring and never having to do the swamp conversion again!
Cheers!

Pool has stayed clearer than any other time. I have had to add some baking soda and some bleach and nothing else. I have swam in it many times as have all the neighborhood kids my grandson is friends with. Is it my imagination or is the water softer than usual with this method?

Likely you are just keeping the FC in the proper range and thus the FC is not too high and there are less CC in the water ... so it is less irritating.

If you want to go to the next level, add 2000ppm of salt ;)

well here I am 4 weeks after finishing SLAM. Happy to report I have put very little into the pool. About 1/2 gallon of bleach every other day does it. I have added stabilizer once, using sock method.
Today my TA is a little high which I find confusing based on the fact that we have had rain and rain used to lower TA. It is registering 110 and I think I am still in a good range because Poolmath tells me not to add anything. There is a part that says if you want to lower TA use Acid, and I did buy some, but it does not say how much. When I enter in my amount of 110 NOW and then add GOAL of 70 PoolMath stays blank.
Wondering if anybody has any thoughts on this?
Tad I am sure the CH is the reason for the softer water based on what you said. I used to start my opening with mega amounts of that. More nonsense realized from "BTFP" (before Trouble Free pool)
