Hi all,

Opened my pool and got the water to be clear enough to see the bottom of the deep end. Over the last week or so, the pool has gone Greener everyday until now my whole pool looks like a swamp. I found my Fc was too low for too long and thats why it went green. I took measurements and they showed I needed to SLAM and get my TA up and pH up because they were both low. about 20 and 6.5 relatively. Also, I had 0 stabilizer. So I put Baking Soda in and Borax and airaited my pool. And added 5lb of stabilizer per the pool store. It has been 3 or 4 days and the pool is still getting greener. I run my sand filter 24/7. I have backwashed, brushed, checked my Fc levels but still it wont clear. The pool store has these "bags" of shock that they said I can use instead of the stupid 5 gallon liquid chlorine, so I have been using those. (unsure if this is causing my issues because last year with the liquid I was doing well all year)

Measurements as of right now:

Fc 9
CC 0
pH 8.0
TA - 150
CYA - 90

I know my TA is way up and so is the pH, thats because when I last tested they were still showing low even after adding borax and baking soda and giving it 24 hours. So I put in 2 more boxes of baking soda and 1 box of borax... both about 4lb... lol, yea not smart evidentally. I was just so frustrated.

Should I get Algicide or something? Should I raise my Fc MORE and leave it high for 2 days... I would like to swim soon, but I cant get it under control. Thanks all!

Hello. You definitely need to lower your pH with muriatic acid to 7.2. Pool Math at the top of the page can help you figure out how much you need to put in. . And then you need to slam. You can read all about that if the link that I provided. The reason why your pool keeps going green is because you’re not using enough of the liquid chlorine often enough for your CYA level. Because your CYA is 90, you need to slam at 35 FC.

THanks! Yea, I just noticed that.... I went to the pool store because they sold me the amount of stabilizer I "needed", and now thats why I need to use so much chlorine. They said 5lb was way too much, I was so mad, like YOU SOLD IT TO ME and said I NEEDED IT, all of it.

So they suggest I pump out 63% of water... well he said about a foot should be sufficient...then refill with hose, then test the Fc and it should show at a lower level, then I need to shock it.

Should I just add a 5 gallon of liquid chlorine (suggested to bring Fc from 9 to 35ppm) instead pf pumping out all that water and refilling?

Part of that is good advice. If you do drain some water and replace it, your CYA should be lower. And it’s easier to do a slam when the CYA is lower. So if you’re willing, go ahead and drain some water and then refill and test to see where your CYA is and where your PH is. If you have to do more than one drain, keep doing that same process until you get your CYA where you want it (30-40 is good) and then work on pH until it is 7.2. Once all of that is lined up, we will begin the slam.

Do not throw shock into your pool, especially if it is powdered. There’s a good chance that the powder that they are recommending actually has CYA in it. So you do not want to go draining water, only to go back and find that your CYA is too high again because of the shock. All you’re going to need once we start slam is your liquid chlorine, a.k.a. household bleach. No additives nothing crazy, just regular bleach.

It’s really up to you. It is certainly possible to slam your pool with a high CYA, it just means that you’re going to have to maintain your FC at a higher level. So if you want to start out with the CYA where it is, go ahead and let’s see how much bleach you actually are going to be using. Use Pool Math to figure out how much bleach you need to use to get to your slam level. There’s absolutely no point in going over your slam level, it’s just a waste of chlorine. And if you stay under your slam level, you will never get this algae under control.

Don’t forget you must get your PH under control first. Use muriatic acid according to Pool Math to get the pH down to 7.2 before you begin the slam.

Again, thanks! I dropped about 6 inches of water.. and am refilling. I will test pH and see what I need to do, I have some acid. Then once that is in order I will check the CYA and Fc. Then use the pool math to get the Fc where it needs to be for slamming.

Excellent! If there is any debris in the pool, do your best to get that out, that will help your SLAM to go faster. Check your FC while you’re slamming as often as possible. Every 2 hours if you can. If not just do your best. The more often that you raise that FC to your SLAM level, the quicker your SLAM will end.

Oh, and take a picture every day in the same spot so you can see your progress. We like to see those pictures too!

SLAM, SLAM, SLAM...... will rid your pool of algae and answer your questions. Follow the process, it works.

Ridding a pool of algae with plain, unscented, liquid chlorine bleach from the grocery store, is an extremely simple process. A process that for whatever reason seems to be confusing. It takes all of roughly 10 minutes (or less) to read and learn how to SLAM your pool, and understand the what/why/when of the process. I used the word "process" for a reason. And the word "simple", which confuses some folks, has an entirely different meaning than the word "easy".
