I had a pool company come and look at it for $125 service fee but they only want to sell me a new heater for $3900.
I have a RayPak 406a heater that the pilot will not light. I can hear it steadily ticking but do not smell gas.

You have natural gas or propane?
All the valves in your gas line open?
When did the heater last run?
Skip the pool company and have a plumber/gas guy check that you have gas flowing at the heater.
