After 3 years of pool ownership and many frustrations with my pool service, I cut the chord. I hope with your help I won’t regret my decision. My test kit is on its way. Real talk starts next week.

By the by, one reason I fired my provider was their inability to take care of mustard algae. I’ve read the post and I’ve slammed the pool. The symptoms are getting a little better.

Thank you..

I read that article and I’m scrubbing now. Thanks!

You will not. I'm new two, took a bit of faith, took me 7 days to drain/re-fill and slam. It now takes me less than 5 min. a day, and I've had two months of PERFECT POOL.

If you want inspiration for all the other successful conversions ---> TFP Clear - Let's see PICs!

Its very hard to accurately do a SLAM Process without a reliable cya reading & an fas/dpd test so post your results when your kit arrives & u can run the full set of tests. Here’s to being on your way to killing that algae monster 🦠 & having a trouble free pool ! 🍻

Thank you. The Slam started with the pool guy. That’s how we parted ways. I have test strips and I’ve been tracking it. The test kit shows up Thursday. I’ll be gentle until I get the tools I need.

You may find that your CYA is so high that a SLAM is not reasonable. The value of the test kit cannot be overstated; your FC for SLAM may be 30+ if your CYA is off the charts…

This is the general procedure recommended before your real kit arrives. Download poolmath and fill in all the info of your pool. Then per app add 5ppm chlorine daily in liquid form to the pool. When the kit arrives do a full run of tests and post them here for your personal guidance to kick in.

I've been consistently watching more and more mustard algae disappear. We're getting there! And, I don't even have my testing kit yet. At the moment, I'm glad I fired my pool guy!

You go! Mine sold me a UV Filter. Never again. Installed a Stenner pump and tank, run my pool on less than 5 minutes a day. Perfect since slam. Easy using TFP Methodology.

Welcome Bwald !!!!

Yeah, none of it has really hit yet. You saved next weeks pool guy bill but bought a test kit so that weekly savings went out the window. BUT. From here on out it's free. The testing, the guidance, the poolmath app.... (although I do recommend you upgrade the app for $8 so you can save/track your results.)

F-R-E-E. And we'll send you out to get the dirt cheap generics of the fancy chemicals that the pool guy was using. like his expensive bag of magic pool elixir that's really just baking soda. Go get the arm and hammer one for 50 cents a pound.

Oh. Right. You probably want to see results too. K. We got that. Scroll the thread below. Keep going cuz they just keep getting better and better. Your heart will sink the first time you see it for yourself as you'll think the pool emptied. The feeling never gets old. How Clear is TFP Clear? Let's See (Pics Please).

Thank you. Based on test strips, I have no stabilizer. I know that’s not as accurate, but it gives me hope.
The test strips I had when I first started didn't register any CYA either when it actuality, it was over 100.

But either way, you are in the right place now and you will get tons of help here!

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement. The test kit arrives today, so the real work starts this week.

One more bonus to firing the pool guy?

The dogs don't go bananas for the 15-minutes he was here every week :) .

Welcome to the club. I fired my pool guy 3 weeks ago. On his last weekly visit, he added a chlorine tab and left in less than 4 minutes with no brushing or water testing at all. I guess he forgot that I have security cameras. Our pool service took a nosedive over the last two months after our last guy passed away, and a new company took over the service. I also noticed very bad calcium scaling on my spa tile that I literally had to chisel off. The SS rim plate on my spa light had also severely rusted in the last month or two, and I've seen more and more small hard brown stains appearing. After reading the forums here, I ordered a test kit and downloaded Pool Math to take control of my pool. My CYA was off the scale at way over 100 thanks to the years of Trichlor pucks, and my CH was only 125. I've done a partial drain to lower my CYA slightly below 100 with more partial drains to come to get it around 60, and I already switched to 10% liquid chlorine. I boosted my CH to over 250 with CaCL, so I'm close to getting my pool chemistry under control once the CYA comes down. My wife recently commented how clear the pool water is now that I took it over.

Be prepared to spend more time and money once you take over managing your pool. I may be slightly addicted, as I've started poolsplaining to my wife, and I even jumped into a Facebook discussion after someone asked for suggestions to fix their green pool. It had over 150 responses, and I was the only one who mentioned TFP and the SLAM process and testing their water before doing anything else. There was a handful of pool contractors and also pool cleaning services recommending phosphate removers, so they are clueless.
My Stenner pump/tank is on the way, and I will be installing a wifi box/timer to control it this weekend. New spa light rim, gasket, and led color bulb on order. Last weekend, I acid washed my spa to remove all of the built up scale. I'm also planning on changing out our tiles and resurfacing the pool deck and plaster the pool/spa later this year, which will be $15K. Next up is maybe a pool robot and automation...

How much was the pool service costing per week? Save that money up for a Salt Water Generator!!! I was just away for 10 days, came home to a TFP pool! Well, my pH was 8.0, but the FC was where it should be. And T.O.M. kept the bottom clean.
Stop working on your pool and get IN your pool and enjoy it!
