How to get the pool eye back in to the return jet?

Every video I can find shows people unscrewing their return jet, but this doesn't appear to unscrew. I have attempted by hand with no luck.

Sorry, that part dosen't look like it is the same age as the return fitting.

Do you have experience with that type of return jet and how I would get an eye back inside of it?

That looks to be a vinyl pool so that return unscrews with the white escutcheon. The return needs to come apart and the eye gets sandwiched in-between.
