My filter pressure dropped down to almost zero over the past few days. I reached into the pump impeller opening and pulled out a tennis ball size clump of pine needles and it seems fixed (for now). Is there a better and more thorough way to get in there to clean it out?

Preventing it from getting past the skimmer basket is the best option. Get some skimmer socks and line the skimmer basket with them. Several of our members use food service hair nets that they buy in bulk fairly cheap. They are single use and throw away, or you can get the more expensive skimmer socks that may be rinsed and reused. If you vacuum with a manual vacuum use an inline leaf trap. It will collect pine needles and leaves and prevent them from going into your pump.
