How screwed am I?

That’s cause we’re all home and bored to tears! I’d even talk about watching paint dry if it’ll keep us entertained.

Speaking of... Helped my wife paint a few walls at her office a few weeks back. The primer was dry within about 30-45 minutes so we could start the topcoat. The paint, on the other hand, said 4 hours to recoat. We didn't hang around to watch it dry. Came back later to finish the second coat.

A Bob Ross marathon and a little CBD oil in your morning Wheaties will bring you much happiness ...

The little bracket was off to the side. I actually moved it over while I had it apart so that it dipped down into the drain line, hopefully that will help a little bit too. Then I added the short piece of copper wire on the outside, and one that goes probably 6-8 inches down the drain hole. I'll find out in a couple months if it works, of course.
If not I could probably talk you through the heat tape fix. :)

Finally got around to looking at why the freezer was struggling to get down to 15 when it should be able to go sub-zero. Put the food in the chest freezer, pulled off the plastics. Fan was not spinning, even if I pushed the door switch shut. Pulled out the plastic piece with the fan, fan motor housing was warm. Some ice buildup, I suspect cause the fan hasn't been working, perhaps leftover from when the fridge drain line was plugged up and water leaking from the fridge got into the freezer door seal and caused ice to build up everywhere in the freezer. Hopefully it's that and not a defrost issue...

Measured the fan receptacle and it's got voltage, so it's not a relay issue but a bad fan motor.

So what was that about Samsung being a service parts nightmare? Oh yeah, I can't buy a fan motor anymore! Looks like a fairly standard shaded pole motor so I can probably hack a generic motor in if I can't located one after I search a few more sites and check eBay.

My GE fridge had a similar issue - the plastic fan blade somehow came off the shaft and eventually fell off. Had to open it all up and found out that the plastic ( 🤬) retaining clip was broken. Put the fan blade on the shaft and went down to Ace to get a new METAL clip for 20¢. Then added some extra foam on the panel to offset it a bit because the plastic would slightly warp from the cold and cause it to touch the fan blade (hence the occasional noise and reason why the cheap plastic clip broke). After the 20¢ expenditure and 2-1/2 labor cost ($0 because I don’t get paid), I was back to sub-zero freezer temps.

Modern appliance = engineered failure = keeps the service guys employed

When the Sammy freezes up the blade often would hit the ice and if it gets stuck enough, either the blades break or it burns out the motor. Luckily mine would always make a horrible noise when that happened before I heat taped it so I saved the motor. It was a pretty good fridge except for the plastics in it being brittle. Yes you should be able to hack in any sort of fan just like I did the heat tape........

You really want to be screwed get a built in refrigerator. I have a 25 year old 48” Sub Zero that I know if just going to give up one day. Replacing that thing is going to cost over $10,000. Which is absurd for a fridge.

25 years old, too bad the same fridge wont last 10 years now... But its been upgraded.... :)

For the amount you’d spend replacing it, don’t bother. Tear it out to the drywall and adjoining cabinets, redo the flooring and finishes and get a modern replacement fridge. Built-in’s have their places in certain kitchen designs but the vast majority of kitchen interiors can easily accommodate a standard roll in fridge and look great.

Then use the $10 bucks you have left over for beer money ....

Time for a trip to the appliance store .... just be warned, lots of manufacturers have limited supplies due to the pandemic and even more limited labor for delivery and install. My neighbor has been waiting 3 months now for the arrival of her new washing machine. Lowes keeps promising her “Any day now ...” and “You’ll be the first customer on our install list as soon as it arrives ...” 🙄

There are a few appliance stores I prefer to do business with over the big box hardware stores as they typically offer better warranty deals and they service appliances directly, no 3rd party contracts. You might consider that if you have that option in your area.

We had a hard time getting a dishwasher for the old house right before we moved, and we didn’t care which one we got because we were moving. With the new house we replaced every appliance and basically won the lottery. They had the washer/Dryer/microwave/oven/dishwasher we wanted in stock and they were delivered within a week. The fridge was a 3 month wait. We were very understanding and pleasant to the sales guy, and everytime we called or stopped in for an update he showed me his wait list for all the other makes/models. Some were 6 months old.

Same with furniture. We decided our 6' son was probably too big for his bunk bed he got when he was 5 years old, so his big christmas present was a new bedroom set. We bought it in early December, and it was to be here the 1st week in January. Over Christmas break we sold his bed and he was just going to have to sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor for a few days. Guess who still doesnt have a bed, with the current ETA sometime in March.
My wife said he will just have to add it to the list of stuff he will tell his therapist when he gets older :)

So out of curiosity I looked, and I'll be darned but I can buy an entirely new tub for this dishwasher! In fact it looks like I can buy just about all, if not all the parts on the dishwasher still. This is completely opposite the experience of looking for parts for my Samsung fridge, where half or more of the parts were discontinued and no longer available!

That said, paying $180 for a new tub, moving everything from one tub to the other, is probably not worth it. I don't know how old it is (no datecode I can find), and it's made interesting sounds in operation so I wouldn't be suprised if the water diverter valve is close to wearing out.

Speaking of the Samsung fridge, the more I deal with it the more I hate it. I'll never buy Samsung again. Fridge is freezing, it's not updating the actual temps unless you unplug and re-plug it in, then it displays actual temps for some time before it stops. Honestly between that and the lack of parts it's probably time for a new fridge too.

We just changed to Samsung after years of LG problems. Numerous freezer thaw issues like yours and the oven that would spike to 800 degrees once a month. We replaced both the oven and fridge twice and had several repair visits each for the times that I couldn’t fix them with Google and Searspartsdirect.

...... The devil you know, I reckon.

Yep. Over and over again, any time a service guy comes out to fix my GE appliances (all circa 2005’ish) or Maytag washer/dryer (2013 models), they tell me to just keep repairing whatever I can on it and not to buy anything new. I said, “There’s got to be a brand out there that’s worth it??” And, to a tee, they all have said, “Nope!” At some point it becomes too costly or impossible to fix, but I plan on stringing it along for as long as I can ....
