How bad is the condition of this pool surface

Just an FYI, I did an acid wash and it kinda worked. It removed maybe 90% of the actual stains on the first attempt, but then I could see that a big part of what was bothering me wasn't staining but maybe missing plaster, and the gradation from different thicknesses of plaster. Since its already drained I got a couple quotes for resurfacing. Full chip out, plaster, fixing tile issues, and upgrading to the VGB stuff is about $8K. Another $2-2.5K to completely replace the tile. I'm going to at least do the full plaster and drains, and if I can find a good tile that I like, replace that, otherwise just have them reseat any lose tiles. I like the retro look of the tiles.

The guy I'm going to go with said the stains were chlorine and copper, and the pool must have been poorly maintained for a long time. He said it was originally white plaster. It was also replastered at some point, but maybe just sand blasted and plastered over. Thats most of what I was seeing. I was tempted to just fill it back up, but I metaphorically found half of money I need under couch cushions, so it wasnt that bad of a hit. Plus it can be started and finished in a week or two.

That’s a fair price for resurface. I had my last pool (as mentioned) resurfaced and put the $2k toward a tanning shelf instead of the tiles. They too were retro and a deep blue-base Spanish tile, so we kept it. Retrospectively the shelf kinda sold the house, but I wish we would have spend the $ to replace the tiles also. I forgot that 2 years prior I sistered in some cheap penny tile into a 1’ stretch of tile that you can’t see unless you’re in the pool. That area was falling apart, as were others. That pool was 32 years old, and they media-blasted the tile with the wrong stuff and left the tile permanently all hazy. They were gentle with the chip-out, and the rest of the tile survived the resurface project, but I really wished I’d had replaced the tile.

Just an update if anyone is interested, I did do a full replaster, and replaced the tile. It was supposed to take a week, but it took 5! Funny, but when they finally got to the replastering part it only took two hours. And the initial chipout was done in a day. Half the delay was probably scheduling, the other half was the tile. I wanted a cool hexagon style tile, but it took awhile to get pricing, and then the pool guys seemed to imply it was going to be hard to do. Moved on to the second option, a simple mosiac, but then the colors I wanted was out of stock. Moved onto a different shade. There was a wait for the tile. Then they did the tile but didnt do the stairs. I originally had tile on there but they didnt do it, so another wait for more tile. The wait was maybe good this time, as I was able to rethink the stairs and had it put on top of the stairs instead of part that goes vertically. I even had them restore the Royal Pools logo. Anyways, they still have some stuff to do around the coping, but at least the pool is filling now. The final cost will be around $12K, as I'm having them to do something else with the plumbing (add recirculation, and another way to drain pool).

Looking good. Who is doing the water chemistry for the first 28 days?

What start-up guide is being used?

Do yourself a favor and find out what start-up guide they are following and what chemicals they will add to the pool when. You want to know all chemicals that have been added to the water when you take it over.

Many PBs have messed up the start-up. Use the guide below for recommended procedures ...
