The pressure gauge on my filter is high and staying in the 25-30 range, even during and after backwashes. Could this be due to the heavy algae? My pool is thick green, can barely see the middle step. I also just opened the pool to start filtering. All valves are open and plugs removed from supply jets.

Sounds like something is wrong if the pressure does not go down after backwashing. There is no doubt that filters can plug up very fast when a lot of algae is present, but there should be at least a temporary reduction in filter pressure after you backwash...
What did you dump into the pool in your effort to get rid of the green? Did you use any "magic" pool store chemicals???
