Helping a neighbor with their first SLAM

Hello,
My next door neighbor just reached out to me a few days ago for help. Their pool has apparently struggled with retaining chlorine all summer long.
It's a 28000 gallon, pentair cartridge filters, SWG system, with an automatic cover. I cannot say much more than that on the equipment front.
My neighbor have a pool service that comes once a week, the service has been turning the SWG up, now to 60%. My neighbors use the pool a lot, they have a big extended family and love pool parties with little kids. This is causing them a lot of anxiety.
The first thing I did was take a CYA reading. As the test is a big subjective I would say it is between 0-10. It wasn't clear but I could still see the dot. I had to come to the inevitable conclusion that with a SWG at 60% it's either broken or you have algae when chlorine is always zero.
In accordance with POOLMATH we started adding liquid chlorine at the SLAM level of 10 PPM. and have continued for a couple of day, now we are adding a bit more but still are not winning . I go there four times a day to do chlorine drop tests and we are still losing pretty much all the chlorine we add in, (during the day every 4 hours we are back to 0.5-1 ppm, overnight 1ppm ). We keep the pool cover closed since the CYA is so low.

1. should we be SLAMing at a higher ppm?
2. in this case should we buy chlorine from the pool store? we are getting it at Walmart because it's 10% concentration (better than HD)
3. should we add CYA to reach the minimum of 30 already or will the CYA be lost to the algae ?

I have been encouraging them to brush the plaster.

Any help is appreciated, I hate to see my neighbors so stressed out and for them this much chlorine added already seems insane (I do try to reassure them constantly that it is not a lot).

CYA should have been raised to at least 30 before starting SLAM. FC just has no chance against UV without CYA protection.
If the pool had any measurable FC, then the cell is working, it's just not able to outcompete the heat and UV.

Raise CYA to 30, then adjust SLAM target to 30 and continue on. Walmart liquid 10% is just fine for SLAM and what most people use.

Once you pass SLAM, CYA will need to be raised to recommended SWCG levels although we're late in the season so it's a bit less important to get to upper end of range.

I would raise the FC to 10 ppm, run pump and brush, and test the FC at 30 minutes after raising it. See what the drop is.

Have you tested for CC?

Mknauss,
The pump is running 24 hr a day, more vigorously during the day. You are saying that I should do readings after 30 minutes not 4 hours right and add chlorine according to loss ?
I did look for CC twice yesterday, once we were at 2 ppm and once at 1 ppm does that make sense?
Would you also recommend adding CYA now? I feel like I was taught that in an algae situation ( and with a cover) the algae feeds on the CYA.

Juliette

CC is trapped by the cover, so you do want to open up during high UV and let that burn off.
I think what Mark wants you to test is if the FC is holding; there could be ammonia present in water created by a bacteria that consumed the CYA, which can then eat up FC very very quickly.

Algae does not feed on CYA and CYA is critical to pool care. So if you test shortly after adding FC (~30 mins) and you have more than 0 FC, you can rule out ammonia.

Thank you both! That info is pure gold about ammonia.
This is what I have done just now and found out.
Started adding the CYA, first sock went in.
I have tested for FC before and after brushing as vigorously as a 5'3" woman can a big pool with a deep end for a long while. I wanted to model it for them to show it's possible.
I wasn't able to optimally wait because I needed to run home, but I will go back in 30 minutes.
by brushing I lost 2 ppm of FC and had 1 ppm of CC. We are still at 10 ppm FC at this moment (I had overshot it a bit in desperation this morning).

To start the SLAM Process
CYA minimum 30 - if less than 30, add stabilizer to attain 30.
pH adjusted to 7.2
SLAM Process FC is 12 for CYA 30
FC/CYA Levels

Follow the process to the letter. No second guessing or changing up the process.

Have your neighbor sign up for their own account here.
Also suggest that they obtain their own test kit and take control of their pool.

If you added CYA, dose FC to SLAM level based on what the CYA should be after the addition of stabilizer - even though the stabilizer isn't fully dissolved yet. Once the stabilizer is added to the pool consider it added and dose FC accordingly.

small update, CYA is dissolving well,
FC dropped another 2.5 ppm in 45 minutes. I raised back up to 12 ppm and will go back before I leave for work in 2 hours. They are going to buy a TFP-100 kit and I am pretty sure that they will start an account too.
