Hello,
My next door neighbor just reached out to me a few days ago for help. Their pool has apparently struggled with retaining chlorine all summer long.
It's a 28000 gallon, pentair cartridge filters, SWG system, with an automatic cover. I cannot say much more than that on the equipment front.
My neighbor have a pool service that comes once a week, the service has been turning the SWG up, now to 60%. My neighbors use the pool a lot, they have a big extended family and love pool parties with little kids. This is causing them a lot of anxiety.
The first thing I did was take a CYA reading. As the test is a big subjective I would say it is between 0-10. It wasn't clear but I could still see the dot. I had to come to the inevitable conclusion that with a SWG at 60% it's either broken or you have algae when chlorine is always zero.
In accordance with POOLMATH we started adding liquid chlorine at the SLAM level of 10 PPM. and have continued for a couple of day, now we are adding a bit more but still are not winning . I go there four times a day to do chlorine drop tests and we are still losing pretty much all the chlorine we add in, (during the day every 4 hours we are back to 0.5-1 ppm, overnight 1ppm ). We keep the pool cover closed since the CYA is so low.
1. should we be SLAMing at a higher ppm?
2. in this case should we buy chlorine from the pool store? we are getting it at Walmart because it's 10% concentration (better than HD)
3. should we add CYA to reach the minimum of 30 already or will the CYA be lost to the algae ?
I have been encouraging them to brush the plaster.
Any help is appreciated, I hate to see my neighbors so stressed out and for them this much chlorine added already seems insane (I do try to reassure them constantly that it is not a lot).
Juliette
