Help with SLAM

Best to leave pump on but incase it's off all night then make sure it's on a good 30 minutes before you take a sample
Pump has been on 24/7 since opening pool. Lost a ton of chlorine overnight. I even closed auto cover last night which I’ve not been doing. We have a lout of yuck in air evidenced by green gunk on siding of everyone’s homes. Just trying to test all my theories. Failed lol

Hit my target this am. Over by .5. Will leave for work in about 15 minutes and be fine all day. Any reason I can’t add another dose to raise chlorine 1-2ppm to help throughout the day while I lose FC?

Did I just read in one of your threads that it is normal to lose about 1/2 of your FC on a normal sunny day? So it would make sense when you are Slaming, if you are not home to add chlorine, that your chlorine loss would be a lot more that if you were simply at a 7ppm FC? So I should expect to lose significant chlorine during the day if I’m not able to make additions and this isn’t necessarily that Godzilla is in the pool? Learning so much!

At higher fc levels it burns off faster. Going over slam level by a few ppm to buy a little time while u are away is ok but anymore just wastes chlorine since the sun will just eat it lol 😆

So I’ve been doing more reading on your forums. I happened to recheck my CYA today. It has gone down a bit. I can’t explain that, BUT that does now explain why I’ve been losing FC. I’ve been SLAM to 20 based on 50 CYA. Tonight, I adjusted to 16, so I am hoping to see improvement. I still lost quite a lot today, but read the more you have the more you lose, so eager to see OCLT tonight.

Had my pool open all day, full sun. Started at 9FC. Fighting a suction leak all day, trying to re-plumb, no pump, no SWG.

Ended the day at 3ppm!!! UGH! Loss of 6. I haven't seen a loss of >4.5, ever. I opened pool early because of deck resurfacing (had to remove mesh safety cover, usually wait until May 25 or so. All the oak catkins are falling (love me some skimmer net covers). Luckily, I'm back up and operating pump. 3 hours of dosing with LC with my stenner pump, AND my SWCG on at 20% should get me back to 9ppm by morning. Constant battle.

OCLT on!

Ok glad to see you! I had retested CYA yesterday, you can see my notes above. It’s lower( don’t know why) at 40. I lowered target to 16. At 8 last night FC was 14.5. I dosed accordingly. Oddly, when I retested it was 18. I double checked. Yep, 18, so I probably miscounted on 14. 5:50 am OCLT FC is 16. I know that is 2. However, I think that I read anything over SLAM target can’t bind with CYA and you will lose it. Would that also happen over night?

So I am still at SLAM level this morning but CC is 2. Will continue checking and slamming. Just wonder if I’m passing OCLT. Not Cc.

Nope, FC needs to lose <=1 FC. Oddly, on the CYA, My pool seems to lose CYA more rapidly than others. Opened and added enough to get to 70. During my weekly testing today (early morning), my CYA was 50!!! Until I remembered I need to have bright sun at my back. Retested after the sun was up, it was 70. Didn't lose anything. Maybe try again with sunlight at your back.

Ok. Sun was at back, but not super bright. If that’s the case, I probably need to increase. slam. Dang. I am still brushing fine brown dust off floor. Sludge in my Robot screen when I clean it.

Take a pick of the sludge. May be dead algae or dirt from wind. Will help to see it. I had lots of sludge in my robot during slam. That's a good sign. Odd, though, with your clear water.

Here is what I am vacuuming up. None of this is visible to the eye on the floor. I am super zoomed in. To the naked eye, it looks like baby pop 😂. Very very fine. Maple trees are pollinating like crazy. Pool is clear.

Yeah, that is not algae. It comes out like a slime ball. I wish I took a picture of it. Do you have the ultra fine filters for the robot?

I'm fighting the oak catkins.

Your pool is gorgeous. I'm jealous.

Well if I don’t have algae what the heck am I doing lol!!! For realz! Could this just be all the crazy pollen and spring Crud right now. I’m mean, I believe I DID have algae, but I’ve been at this 2 weeks. And look at my pool. The Crud falling from the trees right now is insane though.

I did mine last year at the height of pollen season.

My pony is on the fact that you have long portions of time between additions. Go back to the beginning of my logs (VERY BEGINNING) I started with Pool Math when I slammed. I started Jun 27, ended Jul 3. 8 days. Boy was that a nice 4th!

Look at the timing of the SLAM. I worked from home that week and it took me. I was on top of it almost every two hours, consistently. and it still took me 8 days. I think it would have taken 5, but I didn't think of algae in the tubes of the ladder. Took ladder out, BAM. OCLT pass. I was frustrated by the SLAM, and I was like 2.5, 2.0 OCLT for a couple days. Was doing something and looked at the ladder...that thing is hollow!!!

Takes some time, walk around the pool again, look at everything. I stopped my pumps poured chlorine in my skimmers and scrub scrub scrub. Look in your skimmer pot, and the entryway into the skimmers. Take off the weir doors, check the foam in those. Either it is just taking a long time, or we are missing something.

I would say, don't know what you do, but if you can work from home and go every two hours, it will go quicker. If you can't do that, do a weekend and commit to every two hours.

Ok. During the week. Impossible. Crazy work schedule. Tomorrow I will do it. But dang it, about out of reagent and drops don’t get here until Sunday. I don’t think I can’t get local. I replace weir door and foam. It’s new. I’ll scrub skimmer again. No ladders etc as you can see.

Do you have an autofill?

And yeah, if I was slamming 8 days every two hours (even 5 days if you subtract the fact I didn't see the ladder (when my OCLT flattened at 2.)), given your dosing schedule, I'm only a little surprised at two weeks. The only think that tells me we are missing something is that your pool is soooo clear. Usually clearing is last.

what is an auto fill? Automation of some sort? I have quite a bit of automation but not anything for water chemistry. I’d love that. Im nervous was we will be gone several weeks this summer. Neither does good job for me. But, if something I should look into, let me know. Tomorrow mornings dose maybe I will add straight to skimmer. Worth a try?
